been looking around at some cars and a couple are advertised as tribute cars. is that another name for a clone? thanks

yes. and in my opinion value is in the parts choice and quality of workmanship.

Here's an SAT question...

Tribute:clone as administrative assistant:_________

trib·ute noun \ˈtri-(ˌ)byüt, -byət\
: something that you say, give, or do to show respect or affection for someone

: something that proves the good quality or effectiveness of something

: money or goods that a ruler or country gives to another ruler or country especially for protection

1clone noun \ˈklōn\
biology : a plant or animal that is grown from one cell of its parent and that has exactly the same genes as its parent

: a product (such as a computer) that is a copy of another product produced by a well-known company

: a person or thing that appears to be an exact copy of another person or thing

They have been used the same since BJ started using "tribute" to make a clone look/sound better.

Personally don't care about terms. Pro Touring etc. Buy what you like and can afford. Drive it. Often asked, is the R/T real? It is but really don't care.

A tribute car is a car (that should be) built to the exact specifications and details of an original.
A clone is something someone simply slapped a stripe and some badges on. Not an exact duplicate.

Tributes are exactly that, respectful. Paying tribute to the originals.

See, now I would say the opposite. Biological clone = exact duplicate. Tribute = respectful homage that may not be a perfect copy.

Though the term slapped together has no bearing here, as any can be slapped together regardless of label.

I agree that anything can be slapped together (I only mentioned slapping on a stripe, but I digress), and it is interesting that you would view these terms in an exact opposite manner. Agree to disagree, I suppose.

To put it simply, IMHO:

If you're paying tribute to something I would hope you're doing the best damn job possible, covering every little detail and ensuring it's perfect.
If you're cloning something, you have the ability to pump out infinite numbers of them...mistakes and all.

Agreed. Interesting that we see the terms as differently as we do. Just goes to show ya, call it what you want, just enjoy it.

Its the same, not the trim level the car original came with. And usually done poorly.

I'll admit I wrestle with this topic. It really bothers me to see 318 Barracudas going for over 50k with a crate motor and hemi stickers, some emblems, and a new dash. At the same time I'm currently working on a Belvedere II that came with all GTX stuff including the fender tag, hood, and interior from whatever car it was stolen from. The GTX stuff is in great shape. Do I take the time to sell it off and find Belvedere trim for my mini tubbed and hopped up car with a 4 speed conversion? I think "tribute" is over used and most people are making clones for a buck or just making what they want because a hemi is more fun than a 318 and the GTX fuel cap is way more cool and shiny than the Belvedere cap but most of us can't afford the real deal. That being said, I guess if you're honest about what it really is then enjoy it while it's yours.

A Hot Rod is a Hot Rod is a Hot Rod............does not matter if it is an unrestored original, a restored original, a modified original...more known as a Resto-Mod, a Custom..(a customized original), a clone, reproduction or a tribute vehicle (which ever is the "current" slag word for this week...). The whole idea is to have your self a "classic" and to do or not to do whatever you want (or have done) with the goal in mind of making it "yours".
With the availability of quite a few models of classics being hard to find as they are bought up and have not been made for a very long time if one wants to say have a certain model of a certain year if you cannot find one you make one.....just because it is a "clone" does not mean there is anything wrong with it (unless the owner intends on trying to sell it later as an original...in that case that person should have their b---s cut off...LOL).
The classic car hobby is made up of all different types of vehicles with the owners having different reasons for doing what they are trying to do with that vehicle, and no one reason is better or worse than any of the others......they are just different and they are all of what keeps the hobby going.
