making money off oil speculation markets is definite, i know folks in houston who do nothing but trade oil stocks and futures. Having a career in the oil patch is something else. A lot of my close friends who had decades in the industry have gotten laid off from roughnecks to lab managers to supply chain. The tech in drilling is amazing from seismic to offshore tapping reservoirs at 30000 feet, but long term prospects are murky. OPEC cutting back is good news for the industry but they already succeeded in bleeding US productivity. It cuts both ways though and opec is feeling the pain of low margins. They need high prices more than we do.
