Trunk lid rattles and vibrations

Hello All,

The outer skin of the trunk lid on my '69 Coronet appears to not be connected in any way to the underside bracing panel. I'm sure that when it was manufactured they probably put something between the two pieces to stop any contact between them and dampen any vibrations. Whatever it was is no longer working and if you lightly thump the lid with your fist it rattles like a hand full of marbles in a metal five gallon bucket.

My question is what if anything can be done to remedy this? I thought perhaps I could drill a few small holes in the underside and inject some spray foam (the low expanding type like they use for window installation in homes) but I don't know if that would force the outer portion up unless I made some sort of buck to prevent that and insure it remains flat.

If anyone has successfully dealt with this problem I would be very interested in how you solved it.

Get some body panel adhesive and reglue the outer skin to the inner bracing.

First determine for sure what and where the noise is. Get in the trunk and have a buddy close the lid and rap on it. That way you will know where its coming from.

I thought I had the same issue with my 68 Charger deck lid when I heard that noise. If I thumped on the lid it would vibrate or rattle. It ended up it was the torsion bars that aid in lifting the deck lid were causing the noise. I sliced some 5/16" rubber hose and slid it on the bars where they met in the middle. Might be your problem as well.
