Have not yet replaced the plastic plugs in my deck lid after painting last summer. Every time I open the trunk, chunks of rust fall out of those corner holes that are open.
I'm just dealing with this. :-/
Once I clean something like this up buy shaking it upside down and using compressed air to blow it, I use a high "pressure pot" sprayer to get Rustoleum Rusty Metal Primer splashed all in it as best I can. I've had good results with that stuff over rust.
I'm leery of "coatings".
I just did some rocker panels from the front drain plugs.
Rust never sleeps.
Who did the bodywork? I know if I'm working on a car and find fat spots in the lips or pin holes I open it up.... or this happens. Your best bet to preserve it as log as you can is to seal it up tight and pour a fair amount of coating in there and really work it around to completely seal it up. Something that is very fluid like would be best and given the amount it will take to do it right you might want something cheap, something like pore15 or rust bullet would be best but not cheap. If you simply store it somewhere dry you may never have to worry about it though.
