Brave patriotic generation, some/many sacrificed & some gave it all
for God & Country
Thanks, Granddad 'Elmer-Whitey' 'Navy' officer (dad's father)
Pacific Theater 1st (my dad was only 4 when Pearl was bombed)
'Whitey' later when he got back, was released/discharged
he went & volunteered, and manned US Coast Guard patrol vessels
in SF/Oakland Area, up & down the coast too...
&
Uncle Tink 'Marines' officer 1st (my dad's mom/Grammies Bros.)
later re-upped again, different service, went thru BUDS UDT
came out as a Coln. Army Green Beret, all the way thru Korea & Viet Nam,
Army reserve after that...
Lots of stuff going on in the Bay Area during the war/s,
Alameda & Oakland/SF shipyards, he had some great stories
about the time as a USCG still during the war, when he got back
(Granddad later after WWII, he was USCG for 25 years in the Reserves,
lubrication specialist/engineer for Shell Oil during & after the war... for 44 years)
They didn't (RIP) really talk much about the war, any of it...
My family is mostly German too, Patriarchial side Granddad
& German/Norwegian on the Matriarchal side (Uncle Tink),
they had to deal with some serious scrutiny and bigotry,
but they still served proudly & said they'd have done it all over again
if necessary...
D-day was nucken' futs
could you imagine running into unsuppressed machine gun fire
thousands & 100's of thousands of rounds down range for hrs on end
all up & down the beaches, not just one beach or location
(NAZI Bastards)
100's of yards out in the open, with lil' to no cover,
until the cliff sides, that was all mined & killed many many more...
Most were just out of boot-camp/barely out of any formal training,
mostly young men too, not all the old grizzled vets...
Seems like foot soldiers were dispensable, as long as they
fulfilled their agenda/mission (what a waste of human life)...
I never did understand that part...
I respect them all highly for it too...
