Ok I followed suggestions here and else where on removing the old undercoating with a heat source and scraper (actually a Dremel oscillating tool with a scraper blade works great). Now what is the recommend way of removing the remaining residue so one can spray epoxy primer with high confidence it will adhere correctly?

Thanks
Jim

I used brake cleaner to get the remaining residue off. But then you need to wipe down with a thinner because the brake clean apparently leaves an oily film that paint won't adhere to.

Oven cleaner works well too. Just make sure the surrounding areas are protected.

Naptha works well too. When I did mine I used the same tool your talking about but I didn't heat it up. That way it chips off in chunks and less residue. Then when the blade got dull I just ran it across the grinder.

Basically what I am doing. Heat is for the stubborn areas

I used a propane torch, a scraper, and a pick to get most of the tar off. I followed that up with a wire wheel on an angle grinder and a wire brush on a straight grinder. The last step was to use brake clean and a scrubber to get the last little bit. I wiped everything down with paint thinner before using Rustoleum rusty metal primer. I found I averaged about 45 minutes to take 1.5 sq foot of tar yuck to bare metal.

The next time I'm going to have the whole car hot water soda blasted.
