Unknown camshaft

I used the positive stop method on the cylinder 1. I gutted an old spark plug and threaded in 8 mm threads and installed it with a long piece of threaded rod. When the number 1 piston was in exact TDC the mark on the balancer was about 7 degrees off from the zero mark on the timing tab.

So you turned the engine in one direction until no 1 piston hit stop and marked balancer, then did same turning engine in opposite direction, and the true TDC (which is exactly in the middle of your 2 marks) was 7deg off the balancers manufactured TDC mark? (Just checking your first assumption that balancer TDC is bad is correct.)

Yes correct.
In a previous post I said the balancer was some sort of aftermarket balancer but upon closer inspection it looks like it might be a stock replacement unit.

Deputy- if it was me, I'd change the balancer. I never saw/heard of one marked wrong, rubber might still be able to move again.???

Agree with oldbee. Once that rubber gives way, it's bad. You are also running the risk that one day...it could come apart! That can get messy.

Indeed. In time I will drop the k-member and go through it. It's now hemi orange and I would like to give it the original appearance by painting it turqoise.

I went through this exact scenario last year. Once it's slipped, it will continue to slip.. and might eventually fly off. I'd change it now! Most good dampers are well marked and don't need timing tapes too...

Thanks for the advice. I will make the change asap.
Btw, I also checked the exhaust lobe and that had a duration @0,050" of 238 degrees with 0,484 lift. So it's definately a purple cam.
