Some photos I took today. A lot of work left to do. We have removed about 95% of the parts that can be removed. The glass and dash is next!! Any hints in removing the dash will be appreciated. I know the w/shield has to be taken out, that is on the schedule for later this week.

I wish i could give you some advice on taking your dash out but i know there are a few here that can, Looks like a nice project from what you can see, these are a nice looking ride and wish you good luck on it! Before someone else may say it, More pictures please!!! :)

It should be once you get the windshield out, there should be 4-5 bolts or screws you will see that run along the top. there is also 1 bolt on each end that hold the end tabs. Drop your steering column and disconnect your wiring harness and it should come out.

Car is completely gutted now. Roadrunnerman you were spot on concerning the dash. Removed the w/shield and there were the hidden bolts. Crazy design, but the ones who design them never have to work on them!! We sandblasted the rear end and front cross member. Applied a few coats of black paint. No rust around the w/shield and one small spot at the bottom of the back glass.

Working on removing the floor pan.

Did you really seal up the seals while blasting? That blasting will go right past a seal and into the bearings wreaking havoc on everything "nasty stuff". You sure aren't wasting any time "what's the plan for the car"? More car **** please

No, I did not seal up anything, I realize I should have but hindsight is 20/20. Probably going to replace most of the parts now, since I probably screwed up the seals and may have got sand in the tubes. My first restoration is going to be a hard learning experience. The plans for the car is a full restoration, not exactly a factory restoration but a full restoration in the liberal sense of the word. The car is nothing but a shell now. The factory color is Q, which is a dark red metallic. I'm going with a bright red and keep the black interior. My wife's dad died when she was 12 in a farm accident and he had a 67 Satellite that was bright red. I could not find a 67 Satellite, but the 66 Coronet is close so I'm kind of building it for her in memory of her dad. It has a 318 Poly in it and I'm looking in to rebuilding it. I will post some more photos of the shell pretty soon. As to not wasting any time, I was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer in Feb of 2013, had my prostate removed by a "robot" in April, started Hormone Therapy in June of 2013 and 7 weeks of radiation in August and September of 2013. Working on my 83 El Camino kept my mind off of the cancer. Doctor said I'm doing real good and my results have been great. My El Camino is almost done so now my time is being spent on the Coronet. My 22 year old son has never cared much for cars, but he has spent every hour he could helping me with both cars. I would not take anything in the world for the time he and I have spent working on either one of them. If I have to I will buy another car after the Coronet is finished just so we will have something to do together. That is him in the first photo. God is great!!!!

Update: Floor pan removed and hope to have the new one in tomorrow.

Good to hear your doing well and getting to spend time with your son wrenching "nothing better than kids". Pretty cool story behind why your building the Coronet with one big problem "you'll be ready to ditch the El Camino once the Coronet's done haha". Good luck with the restoration

747mopar, thanks for the kind words. The problem with ditching the El Camino is I'll have to walk. I have a "strange" feeling my wife will control the keys to the Coronet! LOL!!! I have been a "car nut" from an early age and have always dreamed of doing a complete restoration and having my son work with me only makes it a better dream come true!! He worked from 8:30 this morning till about 4:00 this afternoon on getting that old floor pan out. He does not like to stop when he gets started.

Have you thought about getting the car media blasted? Uncovering the rust damage, bondo repairs and layers of odd-ball paint these poor cars have accumulated over their lives has been the single most helpful step in my resto-modding process! I too am working on a 66 Coronet 2 dr car as shown here so your pics look very familiar although my floor pan somehow has survived in remarkably good shape. At least your removal of undercoating was quick and easy!Coronet SandBlasted.jpg

I thought of and even got some estimates on the media blasting, but it is not within my budget. The deck lid and the left quarter are the only places I have found rust. Of course the floor was rusted out on the driver's side and passenger side. I wish mine had primer on it right now. Going back with the factory Q paint code, dark red metallic. jlukas, what color is your 66 going to be? I used a "needle scaler" to start removing the undercoating and used a air scraper on the worst spots. I have a lot still to remove.

I have also been using a needle scaler for the undercoating as well and that is miserable work without a rotisserie. I have been using my engine hoist to lift the car nearly vertical which makes it more manageable. After I pull the axle I will likely blast the underside with aluminum oxide to get it back to bare metal down there. I just wish I used the needle scaler so my blaster could have cleaned it all up. He tried to blast on the undercoating but didn't accomplish much.

I haven't decided yet on a paint color but will likely be going with a bright red, something close to original just in a modern urethane. I've not painted a car before but am seriously considering tackling it myself as it can't be that difficult if I put the time into getting the body straight and smooth.

Floor pan is in, thanks to my hardworking son!!! He is 23 years old and a welding machine!!

I'm paying $43 for a tube of SEM Seam Sealer, what are the rest of you using?

Thanks gdrill. I'm trying to keep busy and staying busy with my son is the driving force behind me working on this project. He also is helping me with my 83 El Camino. Yes it came with the bucket seat brackets, but mine has a bench seat and I'm going back with that, after it is recovered.

66 Coronet

Impressive work Cairo....wish my son (27) had shown some interest in the old car thing. Maybe my 66 Coronet 500 would be done by now....

I have a few spares..... if you are missing anything let me know.
