Why does my 318 idle better with the vacuum advance unhooked from the dist. versus hooked up. Timing?? Thanks, Dave

Dave,
Disconnect the vacuum line at the distributor and plug it (golf Tee works great). Put a timing light on the motor and see where your initial timing is at idle. Loosen the distributor hold down slightly and turn the distributor to set to factory specs for your car. Check your service manual to see the location for the vacuum line to connect to. Some use full manifold vacuum (vacuum at idle) and some use ported vacuum (no vacuum at idle). If your motor has been modified you might want to put a 'performance' tune-up on it, which would involve buying a timing tape to attach to the balancer on the nose of the crank and a distributor advance kit for your particular distributor.

If you don't have a timing light yet, spring a few MORE bucks and get a "dial-back" type. These allow you to skip the timing tape and concentrate on the TDC mark on the balancer. They come with instructions, but simply put: They are a nice improvement over a standard light.
