Here's my $0.02 cents, All speculation to begin with, especially with out seeing any photos or Vin #'s or Fender tag Information... If the guy, your buddy, can't do the work himself, he will be upside down on the car, more spent than it will ever sell for, if the shell is in decent shape & only has the typical rust, especially from the North East where they tend to be rust buckets to begin with, even if they weren't left to rot in a field somewhere, the typical rust around the front & rear windshields, rust in the lower quarters & also around the wheel wells, rusted out trunk from leaking seal or rear window, rust in the floor pan from leaking windows/seals, or worse yet rusted out floor & frame from sitting on the ground or over grass for 20+ years, it's just not cost effective to do a total restoration, rusted suspension components, rear axle K-Member etc.,... Resoration shops charge a minimumof $50.00 an hr {that's not the really good restoration shops either}, plus they mark up the parts & shipping, then will have 1000+ hr's easily in a restoration, like you discribe, especially if it sat in a field for 20 plus years, thats a minimum of $50 grand in labor costs, then another $20-$30 grand in parts easily, you can do the simple math, it's not worth that unless it's a Hemi or A12 car.... Now if it were to be a Hot Rod so to speak with cosmetic patch & repairs to drive or maybe race, it maybe a little more viable to do a project like that... Now a 100% OEM type restoration if you do all the work yourself, will cost easily $30 grand, after all is aid & done, you would be extremely lucky to sell it for that, in a timely manner, it better be perfect or near perfect too, especially in this buyers market, it's not 2007 anymore, when these cars were selling for $35 grand plus, Remember if it's still a base 68-69-70 383ci, car it's not going to be worth barely even that, in 100% perfect restored condition, oh yeah I forgot to add, another $3-$5 grand in parts shipping costs, gas money to & from, tons of time on the computer &/or phone, it all costs money & time, E-Bay, Forums, New Paper listings, swap meets, car shows, etc., searching for all the rare or non-reproduced parts, over a couple years in the build... Now if it was a real Hemi or A12 car theres a different story all together, but you will spend $100 grand to make it perfect easily, there weren't that many of them out there in the first place, to be able to get original parts for them & when you do the people that have those parts, usually will want a small fortune for them... Now if it's a Dana 60 &/or 18 spline Hemi 4 speed "track pack" optioned car, or buckets & a console or rally gauges, decor &/or lite package etc., that will help resale too, they were pretty rare also... But the chances are it's a "not very rare 383 bench seat base car", like 95% of them were, it wont be worth anywhere near the 6 figure dream he has, let alone $30 grand.... Good Luck do tell your buddy to do his research & I hope he has deep pocket, these aren't the run of the mill millions of Camaro's or Mustang's, where parts are readily available & a dime a dozen.... There you got my $0.04 cents worth....
