Veterans on the Board

Me Too....

Active duty AF from 71-75. I enlisted to avoid being drafted and sent to Vietnam. The AF promptly trained me how to load munitions on airplanes then sent me to Camp New Amsterdam, HOLLAND for 3 years :upside down:
Yes, I left the US when I was 18 and came back 3 years later and I was 35!
When I got off active duty I promptly joined the AF Reserve and became a C-141 Loadmaster, where I stayed until 2000. 29 total years, retired as an E-8 (no body died and vacated an E-9 slot). I have been too many places to list, including Antarctica and Desert Storm.
Loved all the flying around and the comraderie, don't miss the BS, do miss the flying.
Thanks to all of you still doin it, I dropped off many poor souls in some real shitholes around this world and it was always a great feeling to be able to bring goodies to them and to pick them up and bring them home.

Darius...I know we must know each other. I was in the 708th from 1984 -1995as a C-141 Loadmaster. After the 708th was de-commissioned I went to the 301st to fly C-5's and then during the 2nd Gulf war went to the 312th as the 301st was converting to C-17 and I didn't have the reatainability to slide into that airframe. I originally came into the AF in 1968 as an Air Ops Spec/271 field. Got out in 1976 and did the College thing. Came back in the AF in 1980 with the Reserves. Flew C-130's until 1984 when I transfered to CA and C-141's. Flew them until I transfered to the C-5's. Retired with 34 years service in August 2007. Currently a Civilian Employee with the AF as a 92R Aerial Delivery Rigger @ Eglin FL. Going to retire from working in August of this year and head back to CA which is home. Benn involved in every conflict since I joined up in 1968. Been there---Done That...Even got a T-Shrit from Wake Island University to prove it. Amassed 9800 Flying Hours in my career. If I ever come back in my next life in Human form I want to be a Loadmaster all over again. Ain't no better job in the AF for an enlisted troop. Well maybe a Boomer....but still as a flyer, an Enlisted Troop really has a great life. Thanks to all my fellow bretheren that have served....cr8crshr/Bill:eek:ccasion14:

US Navy. Served on a destroyer. Other that getting hit by ejecting cannon shell at night durring the first gulf war came out ok. Would have rather been in the marines which was part of the navy way back then. What a long time ago that was.

Wow, Lots of veterans here!!
USMC 1983-1986, I was a 2531 Field Radio Operator. When I was in radio school in 29 palms California, I saw this guy taking off a cover from a 69 Roadrunner and had the bug ever since. After radio school, I was sent to Lejuene assigned to 2d fssg. sitting there waiting for my orders, a very squared away Gunny with some shiny wings on his chest came in the door and said "any of you dumb motherf%^&ers want to jump out of planes? I looked at this other guy and we both said yes. So I had a secondary MOS of 9962 parachutist. Volunteered to be in 2d ANGLICO. Basically, I was a jump qualified battery powered grunt ( I guess I was a forward observer too). Anyways, for the next year I got to do some cool stuff that most Marines usually don't get to do. Jumped with the 82nd, repelled with the 101st. Did a mock beach assault with the Italian Marines. Called in laser munitions way back in 84. Quite possibly the best year of my life. The year after that I was rotated over to Okinawa. Hated it there. Was in a HQ company with 4th marines. Great guys in the platoon, Colonel was a ******** and our captain was an asskisser. worst combination you could have. When I was getting close to getting out, I went to the Air Force recruiter on Okinawa and inquired about getting an inter service transfer. He gave me a line that I will never forget. He said "why don't you get out and get deprogrammed for a few years." Advice that I took to heart and am still waiting for that to happen. ;-)

I was an Engineman (EN2) on FFG 51 and FFG 43, the Gary and the Thach. Stationed out of 32nd St, San Diego CA. Did three 6 month deployments to the Gulf.

My wife: USN 1995-2000. HM3 at Camp Pendelton and NAS North Island. Because I was stationed to a ship, she served on land her whole enlistment. She was an EMT, and hurt her back so bad she was mediclaly discharged and is now 100% disabled. She receives benefits, but it in no way makes up for what she can't do now.

US Navy 1965 - 1968, Gunners Mate (Guns) third class (E 4). Shore duty for a year then two years aboard an advanced aviation base ship (AVB 2) homeported in Naples, Italy. The ship was an amphibious ship capable of running aground which we did several times a year.

I am a disabled veteran due to my military service. I am also the current president of the Vietnam Veterans of America chapter 698 in Bluffton, IN. A BIG thanks to all my brothers in arms for their sacrifices.

Hi to all you vets and thanks for your various contributions and sacrifices.

Joined the USAF in March of '67 after getting nowhere with the draft board regarding my college credits vs draft eligibility. Chose Electronics and ended up being put in a field where we operated and maintained our own equipment on-board converted SAC KC-135's as well as at a ground site at Kimpo, S.Korea (during the Monsoon season, and a 2nd tour with waist high snow). Stationed in Sacramento, flew out of Hickam Field on some missions along with our own support tankers (3 each), attended the Survival Training mandated by SAC up at Fairchild, got into places like the Los Alamos Labs, Livermore Labs, and others, as part of our "Cold War" new prototype equipment training.

Out in March of '71 and then back to college for an Automotive Engineering Degree in April '74 at Western Michigan University. Fantastic hands-on lab activities for each automotive classroom course; such as Carbs & Electricity, Engines, Transmissions, Chassis Components, Fuels & Lubricants, and Senior Design Project (prototype build, test, etc). Sure beat the Calculus, Physics, Statics, Dynamics, and other such courses!

Now it's "try-to-fit-everything-in-during-retirement-I've-been-wanting-to-do" time.
And good luck and God Bless to you all.

US Navy 1980 - 1986.
USS Nimitz, CVN-68, RL Division
MM1/ELT (NEC 3386)

Trained on A1W nuclear reactor in Idaho desert which was my favorite duty station. Two mediterrean deployments including many days off the coast of Beruit. Ship was homeported in Norfolk, VA at that time. You may have seen some of the F-14's with the skull & crossbones on the tail from that era, VF-84.

Thanks to all who have served & currently serve! Folks that have never done military service cannot know the sacrifices soldiers, sailors, airmen, & marines make.
