I have new-in-box set of victor max wedge heads. As i understand it, the early version of these heads flowed pretty good, then edelbrock made some changes to the casting. The newer version has more metal in the ports, and takes quite a bit of work just to get to the flow of the earlier head.
Now to my questions: How do i tell which version i have? And is the newer version really substantially worse? And if these that i have are the poor flowing version, are they worth the porting cost, and the $1000 rocker arms, or should i bite the bullet and simply get some 270 tf
Application is a pump gas 520, primarily strip 62 savoy, 3250lbs.

The way i understand it is the earlier castings had flow troubles and the 75cc chambers, the newer castings flow better and have a 72cc chamber. Just going off what my builder told me, we didn’t flow mine but set it up with the t&d rockers, back cut ferrea competition valves, little bit of hand blending. Unfortunately the motor hasn’t seen dyno time or in car action so I can’t attest to how they perform but my builder was confident in them.

Post a pic of the chambers.
It’s easy to tell if they are the first or second version.

Depending on how much power you’re trying to make, and what you could get selling your heads......it’s very likely cheaper to sell what you have and get some TF270’s.

Thankyou Mr. Porter. Here are some pics. As to power, im not greedy. Mild 440 got me mid elevens, all iron real max got me 11 ohs, id like mid tens out of this one, 3450 with me in it.
Also, one more question, if you dont mind. I want to use some ross d-dish pistonsthat were custom ordered for original B1. I know the valve reliefs aren't in the right place, but they are HUGE, and this piston has almost a 3/8 deep dish. Will they likely work as they are, or should i call icon, they have a shelf piston that will work.
Edit: sorry about chamber shot, no flash. I'll try again.

Those are the newer version heads.

The chambers are tighter to the valves, so without reworking them the low/mid-lift flow numbers are lower than the earlier heads.
I’ve only had one set of early MW victors in my shop, my “recollection” of those was that they had a very similar shaped short turn to the original version std port victor.
But that was quite a while ago, and I’m just not certain that’s how they were.
The reason I mention it is the later ones I’ve had here(a few sets) have a much taller/more filled in short turn than how I remembered the early version having...... which would only really be relevant in terms of what they flowed “ootb”, and how well they would respond(or end up) with only minor reworking.

As for the pistons/valve pockets re: B1’s....... the only way to know how well they’d work with the new heads is to mock it up and check.

I’d probably just opt for the correct Icons.

Obviously, with a well thought out package, mid-10’s at 3450 wouldn’t be that hard.

Interesting looks and facts about the new heads.

In this case, the “new” is relative.
They changed the castings several years ago....... and they have been the way they are now for way longer than how they were when they came out in their original form.

It’s probably best to think of them as version one and two...... and not get hung up on the “new”, since NIB version one heads still pop up once in a while.

The ones in the pic are version two.

@malex runs these heads on his car with good results.

Correct 67, my Victors on my 505 work pretty good. I don't have a lot of work in them and they put me through the eyes consistently between 10.0 - 10.10. Car is legal to go 10.0, obviously going to stick with them.
