I understand I need to wire my Volt gauge itself to a switched hot but what about the light where do I wire that so it works with the other dash lights? For some background I have about every stinking book you can get on the subject and as far as I can tell my question is to simple (or I am to stupid) that they don't really explain it. Thanks, Al

All you need to do is go to the fuse box, find the fuse for the dash lights and plug the wire in there. It will then work with all the rest of the dash lights. It's pretty simple.

In my 69 belvedere it's the orange wire. What I did is this - turn the dash lights on, but set them to like half dim. Then use a volt meter on the fuse box and look for the circuit that is less than 12v, maybe like 5v - 9v. Then retest with a couple different settings just to be sure you have it (maybe that part is just my OCD lol). The rest of the circuits will be 12v or 0, not in between (assuming a fully charged battery).

What year and car?

It's a 1965 Dodge Coronet that I am adding a Volt gauge to. Now that I have read the replies I realize I was way over thinking this...thanks guys.

First step is to identify the wires and one off the alternator pole... it won't have any other circuits in place and you will know what that's putting out direct. And the other off a wire to the radio lights that hook to the dimmer.... pinching a wire on a fuse will work but isn't tidy and is a bit of a hack way around it... I splice the radio one because it's longer and usually empty... because the original radios gone or replaced with one that doesn't use the dimmer ....
