I'm looking for a new steering coupler for my car and I can't find one anywhere. I've heard they are no longer produced but has anybody been able to improvise one or find one from a different vehicle that can be made to work? Mine completely fell apart, and I can't steer the car at all. So we're clear I'm talking about the rubber piece with the four steel triangular pieces inside of it that connects the lower steering shaft to the steering box.

I need the rubber piece, not the steel part that slides. I need the rubber disc that is similar to a rag joint but seems to be NLA everywhere.

That is a nice piece. Guess I should just save up and buy one, would be nice not to ever have to replace it again.

Thanks, they have a lot but looks like they don't have the rubber piece either. I will probably just order a metal one from bouchillon since they look real nice and it's the same shape as OEM.

For the record, IIRC 73 is a one year only part.

In 74 they changed to the size that's the same as most ford, and used that all the way into the late 80's in trucks :(

I think smaller ford (mustang, falcon, maverick) may be the same diameter as ours, but as thin as the part described above.

If I can find any in the HELP section, I'm going to try stacking two together.

Plan B is that I have a 1974 column to try.

Ok, post your results when you try out the two stacked up method! I'm curious if it'd work.

Also for the record, the Bouchillion part is EXACTLY the same size as a regulation hockey puck.

Hmm, might have to go pick up a hockey puck after work and see what I can do...

Just migrate over to what Flaming River has to offer, I did for my 70 300, same issue, solved it with 2 U Joints and a connector shaft, no more Rag Joint!

Or, you could go the hockey puck route, or like I did make one out of steel stock, cost was under 40 bucks, and the hockey puck one was under 8 bucks. The steel one is actually installed in the car now. didn't want to use the hockey puck because of the proximity to the headers!

I just made one out of a hockey puck today, I bought an orange one that's supposed to be more dense so hopefully it handles the heat. Gonna try mounting it today and I'll post pictures! Do you think it's necessary to install steel sleeves inside of it or should it be okay putting the bolts directly through the rubber?

I did the steel sleeves in the puck just because it gives a better surface to torque the bolts to and also less play possible as well as less chance of the bolts wearing the inside of the holes.

I'm buyin a puck.

They're $5.

How easy are they to drill?

Very easy to drill, just go slow so you don't melt the rubber.

I used a spade or paddle type bit to drill out the holes.

One consideration to the hockey puck idea.....
If the rubber fails on an original those 4 steel "triangles" will allow some degree of steering ability, albeit very sloppy.
If the $5 hockey puck fails, you will lose all steering control.

I would be interested to see what is inside the Bouchillion part.
