Why would two 4 speeds the same year and from the same engine be different?

I have two 4 speed transmissions here and I cant figure out why they would have different bearing retainers when they are of the same year and from very similar cars.

Being that they are both 1969, the whole vin is stamped on the trans so there is no disputing what it came from.

The first unit has: tail shaft housing number 99127 and main case number 99129 and has a 4.3" bearing retainer.

The ID boss says: RM21H9E127230 PP833 2873 0257

The second unit has: tail shaft housing number 96707 and main case number 97622 and has a 4.8" bearing retainer.

The ID boss says: WH23H9G166720 PP833 2572 0012

Why so much difference when they are the same year and same car lines?? Any ideas?

I'm just tossing this out.........one is from a small block or one was built later in the year?

Off topic. Do you have a pic. of the vin number stamped on the WH23H tranny. I dont think they made a 383 4 speed WH car. Could be wrong though.

Its a charger or coronet (wh23).

No Charger.

W - Coronet
H - High
23 hardtop
H 383 big block

yes that is correct ....it was a 69 coronet 440 model ...keyword WAS. Still doesn't explain why the transmissions are different for the same year of cars with the same engines.
