Possibly a dumb question, but how does the windscreen washer work? Do the wipers have to be switched on first for the pump to get power?

Mine aren't working;
Pump is good.
No power to the pump.
pulled the plugs from the press button and tried jumping them together but nothing.
I'm going to check the plug with a multi, but looks like there is no power to the washer press button.

Wiring diagram says the power comes from the wiper switch, so I'm not sure if they have to be on to get the washers to pump. I have tried it both ways with no success.

If anyone has any tips or similar experience, I'd appreciate the help.

Cheers!

Not sure of the year of your car but on my 69 RR power runs through the wiper switch but the wipers do not need to be on to spray water. The pumps do go bad but if you do not have power to the pump check to make sure the ground is good to the body, pump should have a ground wire on it. if it is check the connections from the fuse to the wiper switch with key on you should have voltage at the wiper switch and the one side of the push button for the washer pump. if not check fuses. and or trace the wires back to the fuse box.

You can also check the pump switch with an ohm meter to see if it closes (makes contact0 when pushed.

Thanks for the reply, its a 68 Coronet.

Got the ground on the pump, and the pump works with power applied, just no power getting to the pump. I put the multi on the power from the loom to pump and grounded it and wasn't getting a hit at all. Obviously checking while the button was pressed! lol

I'll check the fuses, tho the wiring is all new and so are the fuses.

Does the car have to be on to get power to the washer pump? I have the wipers working with out the engine running, but no washer pump.

I do need to put the multi to the washer button power source to check, but as mentioned, when I jumped the switch (should always be in the on position) I got nothing at the pump... so the button may be bad, but it isn't stopping the flow of power in this case.

there is no fuse to check for wipers or washers.....

key has to be on in order for wipers & washers to work.

Well I'm going to look like a moron if I don't have the key in the on position! I'll check quickly tonight.
