The latest on dealing with the DMV.
Went round and round with them today,
and it seems the only way to get the truck
titled, since there's a serial number on the
cab, is to get a bonded title. I bought the
cab via a bill of sale. I tried explaining to
them that the title went with the chassis
when it was sold. The bond lasts 3-5 years.
When the bond is issued, DMV will assign
a new vin# that's applied to both the chassis
and cab. Kind of an extra step and added
expense, but I can understand why it needs
to be titled this way.

Just an FYI for those that may find
themselves in a similar situation.

27 years ago I started on an ambitious
project to put my vocational talents to the
test. I, (with the help of a fellow engineer),
thought it would be fun to adapt a tube type
chassis to pre-war sheetmetal. Everything
purchased as far as body stuff goes, was on
the up and up. No nefarious practices,
followed the rules. All of the chassis
tubes were individually modeled on CAD
and assembly models created to come up
with the final chassis assembly.
Fast forward to today when DMV's attempt
to apply current policies vs. those of 27
years ago. Big problem, as a bill of sale
then was good enough. Now they require
a title on ANY body (even an 80 year old
truck cab that sat in a farmers field for
40 years), if it's got the serial number tag
attached. You gotta know the owner is
long dead, so the DMV's requirement
for the previous owners signature on
a duplicate title application is ridiculous.
If my surety bond attempt doesn't fly
my only recourse is to hire a lawyer, or
buy another truck cab with a title attached.
All other sheetmetal parts on this truck
are a mixture of Ford (bed), Plymouth (hood),
(doors), (fenders), (grille), Dodge (cab),
wheelbase shortened 8 inches.
Yet, DMV here thinks it looks "factory".
I can't help but feel those in power in
liberal states are doing their best to
put a halt to something that's akin to
mom and apple pie. Building a hot rod.
God bless our veterans!
