Moved away from CA for 10 years... when I got back I got 2 speeding tickets in 6 months! In the 90's, the CHP tended to ignore anyone driving the flow of traffic and nail the people hauling ***. I get a feeling that the state's budget woes have changed the message to "write as many tickets as you can, our jobs are depending on that revenue", because both my tix were less than 10 over the limit.
But I have had some lucky breaks. Up near Yreka, a notorious speed trap on I-5, a CHP fired out of the median and started after me. I could see him a ways off, and I knew I was nailed. For the hell of it, I took the next exit, and he flew down the ramp on the right shoulder, and cut in line for the light right behind me. Obviously I pulled to the side, sure I was going to get yelled at if not hauled outta the car. He asked the standard question "Do you know why I pulled you over?" I said "Yes, Officer. I was traveling at around 77 miles an hour in a 65 zone." He stopped, did a double take, and said "That's exactly why. You're the first driver that's been honest with me all day. I appreciate that, and I'm going to let you off with a warning."
I sat there after he had gone for a good five minutes, breathing deep. What a nice guy. These days, my speed is creeping up again- I may be getting pulled over pretty soon...
