Looking for a rear axle pumpkin assembly from an early B-body slant six car that came with an automatic; this would have the smaller 8-1/4" R&P (in the 8-3/4" type axle housing) and should have a 2.93:1 gear ratio. This is going into a '62 B-Body /6 axle that has to tapered axle shaftsd.

May be able to take a whole axle unit if it is the mid-Atlantic area or WV or KY. Tnx!

Here is an update with some PN Info:

Per my parts interchange book for '56-65, the diff case (ring carrier I think they mean) PN is 2070704 for the 2.96 ratio, and PN 2070706 for the 3.31 ratio. R&P PN is 2070808 for 3.31 and 2070809 for 2.93.

Differential housing PN is 2070741 on my present 3.31 x 8-1/4" R&P, and should be the same for the 2.93 x 8-1/4" R&P, and is the same one for the 8-3/4" small stem pinion, I do believe.

I can supposedly use the 8-3/4" with a change in the center thrust block but would prefer the complete 2.93 x 8-1/4"

Well, nothing so far....thanks for all the views. I can also use a standard 8-3/4" center section with 2.93 gears. So, if anyone has one, please PM me.

I'm not seeing how you think an 8 1/4 r&p and an 8 3/4 r&p will interchange, or have I misunderstood what your saying?

I think he is refering to housing .

The diff case is the part that bolts into the housing and all the 'guts' (ring gear, spiders etc) that go into it and the carrier is the part that the ring gear bolts to. IE, the loaded carrier bolts into the case. I have heard that the ring gear is smaller in the older 8 3/4's but don't know for sure.....had one awhile back but never took it apart. DoctorDiff might know.

Well the old, lighter 8-1/4" R&P's are NOT to be confused with the later 8-1/4' Spicer axles with the rear load cover. These early 8-1/4" R&P's go in the early 741 case and are for real, and were produced for the /6 B-bodies at the same time as the 8-3/4" was produced for the V8 cars for '62-'65 with the tapered axle shafts... in the same 741 case. So in a way there is such a thing as a 'smaller' 8-3/4"; it is the 'early' 8-1/4" and were made as well as the 8-3/4" for the early B-body years. My '62 FSM covers both set sizes.

The actual gear carrier is different as Cranky notes as well as the R&P but they bolt into the 741 case like an 8-3/4". If you want to see for-real-live pix side by side, see the Parts Wanted section on /6.org. And then refer to the last 2 paragraphs in the mymopar detailed info on 8-3/4" rear axles.

Sooooo, where I am now at is to look at finding an 8-3/4" 2.93 gear set (ring and pinion and the carrier) that I can put into my early 741 housing or find a complete 741 housing with a 2.93 gear set. I am giving up for now on finding the old 8-1/4" R&P /6 center sections; I bet they are out there but 99% of owners would not know that they have one since it seems they are a great big secret! They just think they have a 'smaller' 8-3/4". (" I guess maybe the heat got to it and shrunk it".) LOL

'62-'65, I do believe. Only B-Bodies as far as I know; don't think they went into C-bodies but not 100% certain. My '55-'65 parts interchange manual lists 8-1/4" rear axle parts for 4 those years.

Well, a small Mopar miracle has occured: the exact early B body 2.93 ratio axle I originally wanted popped <100 miles away. Turned out it was in an older ad here listed as an 8-3/4" with no year ID. It is very likely to be the oddball 8-1/4" from a '62 slant 6 based on the case number and ratio and year. I want to thank everyone who expressed interest. Thanks to 'twomopars' for the axle!
