OK, this is for you numbers guys.
I got a friend looking at buying a 69 Charger. It's a builder for sure.

The question is in the VIN.
It starts with XP29J9B. Which from what I can tell, says it's a regular model Charger with a Hemi. Plus it was originally a 4speed car.(Currently has a 440/727 in it that has been there for a very, very long time.)
The VIN matches in all locations, but the fender tag is gone.

Certain experts say this car can't be. They actually said the VIN is a typo and that it must be a XS29J. But it's not an R/T, even though the expert called it an R/T in the official report.

So, I am lost and in need of help from the number knowers. What gives?
Is it a typo? Is it a rare piece of one off Mother Mopar? Without the original driveline or even a fender tag, it certainly is a long way from being a whole car. Please help.....

If I was the buyer I had tried to find a buildsheet in the car

It is pretty well known that there were many 69 Charger 500s or Daytonas that had the wrong prefix characters in there V.I.N. from the factory, so it is just as possible that the car's V.I.N. is incorrect in that way as it is that the 5th digit is wrong. There are some telltale signs that are Hemi specific to look for.

The seasoned, experienced Hemi guys know enough not to discount a Hemi car without the TBs but know that ALL Hemi cars had the triangular metal brace at the back rear spring hanger and the extra metal reinforcement in the snubber area that no other cars got.

Look for a reworked VIN tag. Do the core support and trunk lip match? Fender Tag? In addition to above, look for damage to these areas that prove a modification. If it is legit it is a mistake, but what would be cool is another factory promo base Hemi Charger.

So, am I understanding that only R/T's came with Hemi's?
VIN looks cherry and matches the core support and trunk lip....
It's not an R/T for sure, so it could mean the J code is wrong....

Except for one car (so far) it is agreed upon that all R/Ts found have had a 440 or a Hemi.

look for the hemi signs , like does it have hemi torq boxes in the rear and some of the other suppension reinforcments

there are a couple of supposed hemi xp vin cars but this would be a super rare find so dont get taken do you home work

find the build sheet or try and trace the fender tag down

Any exhaust tip hangars? Any evidence of the dual exhaust hangar? All 440, Hemi, and 383 4V cars would have dual exhaust, so the extra hangar would be bolted through 4 dimples on the left side, opposite of where the single exhaust hanger is riveted to. Am I remembering this correctly? If a conversion, they probably didn't use a factory hanger, or just drilled holes wherever, and the 4 dimples the factory drilled through would still be there. Easiest to see from inside the car, with the rear seat bottom pulled forward. A Hemi would have a 1/4" fuel return line, so that would run along with the normal fuel line. Is there a Dana or the six left and five and two half right leaf springs? Hemi K-frame changed, I'm sure. Are Hemi torsions the same as 440?
