You gotta be gidding me

You can talk to him, but I see it going one of two ways: there's a 10% chance he'll think "wow, I need to straighten up" and a 90% chance you'll just become his latest excuse for why his life sucks. Those "bad luck" guys who spend a lot of time drinking and hanging out aren't victims of bad luck, they are victims of themselves. Worse, these guys tend to be liabilities as well. They're your best friend until a better friend, like a lawyer, tells them they can sue you for his getting hurt on your property, and because you allowed him to get falling-down drunk on different occasions, the jury will take his side.

I would ditch the "bad luck" and go buy a knife at a store. Better to be another "bad guy" in the sad life stories he'll be telling to the next enabler he leeches on to than the sucker who he cleaned out in court.

I would have a talk with him. Explain to him that your garage is a place of work. That if he is going to drink there to limit himself to a couple and that is it. You dont need to lose everything you worked for. Tell him you enjoy having his company around and he could learn some things better if he wasnt intoxicated. I went through this with my friends also and if they are true friends they would comply with you requests.
