440 ticking question

Have a fairly fresh 440 (74) with a recent ticking sound. Thought it was a header leak,but no. It did get hot (230) right before this started. Stock heads.etc. Runs fine otherwise. With no rocker adjustment, what can I do?

What type of lifters are you using?Determine which bank is ticking,pop the valve cover and take a looksie.

Lifters, rockers all stock. I did replace one rocker before I installed motor in car (due to hairline crack). I bought 2 as a set. I just pulled the other of the wall in my shop, and I noticed there is no small oiling hole at lifter. Shouldn't they all have that?

230 temp isn't even beginning to touch anything yet.You could have damaged a lifter or cam lobe.Real easy to do with standard oil and high temps.If you use high zinc it shouldn't have been a problem.It could just be the fact of not enough lifter preload due to worn rocker arms.I wouldn't use stamp steel rockers,a minimun of ductile adjustable rocker arms.

You know Moparpoor brings up a excellent subject that many people look right over that these older "non-roller" engines need a good Zinc oil additive as the oils after 1990 did away with the Zinc, I agree 230 is not going to hurt the engine either but your lubrication could have been a cause, BB rockers have a oil holes in the rocker shaft and feed oil to the inside bottom (wear side) of the rocker I would pull the valve cover off and start it up see if you can see anything out of the ordinary.

Isn't that a GM rocker?
440 has shaft mounted rockers, and oils through the rocker shaft. Did you install the rocker shaft with the holes pointed in the correct direction "not upside down"?

Yep, I couldn't find a picture of a Mopar rocker. My bad. I was thinking the pushrod seat would have a hole in it for oiling from the top, but it's been awhile since my last day of sobriety.....

Is your push rod length correct and providing the proper lifter preload?

I did add zinc to oil. I removed valve cover and all rockers on this side have the hole at pushrod so thats not it. When overheating, we found it to be air pocket in block not escaping. Had to run without tstat to fix. run 190 tstat now and fine. Pushrods all stock as is everything in head.
Thinking of draining oil, cutting filter and checking. Will try Mobil 1 this time.
Local guy says all of his mopars tick at some time, but I am not comfortable with it.

The only time mine tick is if I start them up to move and then shut em off. If I do that a couple of times within a day or so without driving and letting them warm up good, then they will generally tick for a bit but always stop once the oil is circulated well.
