In the garage. Under the hood. Again.
I once again seek the advice of the experts here. I have no gifts to offer, merely warped humor and gratitude.

So...I want to replace the rear brake shoes,hardware,w.c.'s,etc. on the the '64 Sport Fury. Since I recently found what is supposed to be a complete A-body disc setup for the front, that will be addressed in another thread(to be titled "How the @#$% do I put this on?!"). My (reproduction) shop manual does NOT show a breakdown of the complete 8-3/4 rear axle, but does for the Valiant line. Lot of help there. Plus, all it says is "...remove brake drums...";doesn't bloody tell me HOW to remove them. I've removed the nut,can see a keyway, and it would seem that the entire drum should slide(with a little "hammer" time) right off. The adjusters are backed off fully;hard to tell if the shoes are still contacting the drum. WTF am I doing wrong,or not doing,or...?

Also...can the rears be converted to 3" shoes and drums? While I'm at it,I figure a slight upgrade wouldn't hurt in the braking department. Anybody else ever try this at home? With parental supervision,of course.

Yep they can be tough to get off. You'll need the correct tool which is a tapered hub puller. They can be either rented or bought at a good tool shop in your area or online. There really is no substitute as the hubs take a tremendous amount of force to get them off. Don't hit them with a hammer or use a gear puller on the drum's outer lip.

Here is a good link on the removal of mopar tapered axle hubs.

I think on early nut type 8.75 drums you will have to use a puller. Hey watch the &%%#%$^ words lol

Thanks,HitIt;I see some tool shopping in my future-the very near future. I also frequent the 62-65 site(shhh, don't tell the mods...),usually with a bib on. Keyboards are expensive...

So,anyone know if these are readily available? I really don't want something from HF(not for this job),if they even offer it. I see a classified ad in the "Wanted" section in my future as well.

Sorry Dad-don't tell Mom,ok?

Kind of had a feeling that this was going to become more involved;not a problem, though. I'm really enjoying-so far-the mechanical challenge of a car again, and really learning about my personal ride. Been involved with the bikes and snowmobiles for the last 20 years or so,and really haven't been into the cars to the extent to which I'm involved with this project. Other than the typical maintenance,of course.

NO,NO! Not the dish soap!

Just make sure your e brake is not on and it will take a little wiggiling back and fourth but they shod come off.

I got one that I no longer need, used 1 time on each side to get the drums off. Send me pm if you want a tool for cheap.

I just had an old timer tell me the way they used to loosen them the fastest if stuck at their chrysler garage back in the day was to loosen the nut just a bit and take the car out in the parking lot and do some figure eights...said "popped them loose everytime" just dont take nut loose more than a little bit though.

Yeah, my grandpa told me the same thing, although some got the nut too loose and you can imagine the fallout from that.

That was way back in the day when MY dad was just a youngin. Video of it happening would have been cool to see though.

I had an Old Timer to tell me the same thing years ago ! :rolling:

A little update;I purchased 5.7 Hemi's puller, and it's the cat's azz! Followed the advice offered on this site and the pics/tips on the 62-65 B-Body site, and we're happening. One of the best tool investments I've made-Thanks Zack!!! Everyone with an old style rear axle NEEDS one of these-go buy your own,you can't have mine!

Ha ha yeah the right tool for the job. How long did it take you
to realize there is no way it would come off other than with that tool? For
me it was within the first minute I'd say!
