well guys i was thinking bout removing my tranny and rebuilding it. the only thing im concerned about is the torsion bars. i was wondering how do you remove them to drop that bar they go into right underneath of the tranny. 73 roadrunner is what im working on

Yeah the torsion bar mount is a pain in the butt.I just jack up the front end, back off the torsion bar cam bolts then drop the torsion mount by removing the two bolts. You will have to use a dead blow hammer and or a pry bar to pull the mount towards the rear of the car...Do not hit/scratch/gouge or mark up the torsion bars.....It's a good idea to measure the ride hight of the car before you do this so that you can dial it back in later.Oh and use lots of lube on the cam bolts.

hey i appreciate it sundance. is the cam bolts the bolts at the front of torsion bars. the ones on the ends.

torsion bars

Like 69 said, you can remove the trans without removing the torsion bars. If you remove them you may open a can of worms. Allignment issues, mount bolts braking/stripping.

Hey midnightrider1818,They are rite about the can of worms lol.I rebuilt the whole front end so for me it was worth it.You should be able to remove the trans mount and just slide the tranny back then tip the bell housing down and towards the front of the car and yank it out.

alright guys. i appreciate it. i dont want to open a can of worms. i should be able to unbolt everything and slide the tranny back and tip tbe front down to get it out. without removing any components that have to deal with the torsion bars.

Yep, the trans CAN come out with T-bars in place.

I have a 73, you can pull the trans without removing the T-bar mount. Unless of course some previous retard put the bolts in backwards.....

torque converter

Yup, hold on to to torque converter so it won't crash to the floor.

alright guys. i sure do appreciate it. that eliminates alot of work that has to be done. them torsion bars look like a real pain in the ***.

I have replaced the trans from my 74 charger without having to remove the tortion bar xmember as others have stated just remove the trans xmember, move the trans back then the front down and out. To keep the TQ in place, clamp a vicegrip on the bell housing to free up a hand.

This Spring I will be removing the torsion xmember to put in steel bushings. I know I can do this without actually removing it but I found a replacement as the one in the car must have snagged on something by the PO... I'll post snaps when I get it out to show how mangled it is! lol

unless there is something I don't know about that is very different about a 74 Charger, the "transmission crossmember" is welded to the floor and the frame rails. There isn't any "taking it out" without doing surgery

Ok here are pix of my 74 Charger Trans & torsion bar Xmembers. The pictures were for another post to show how the 73 & 74 tortion bar Xmember attached to the trans xmember with bushings.

In the pix you can see one of the bolts that a secondary member bolts to the trans xmember... that secondary member actually carries the transmission load to the xmember... yes the main xmember IS welded in... I guess I should have been more specific, EH! lol

I guess them pix also show how mangled the torsion xmember is too! LOL The PO musta snagged it pretty hard!

Hmmm Just thinking maybe your RR doesnt have that removable part on the trans xmember, I dont know for sure, but I hope it does as it makes removing the trans relatively easy.

ive always wondered if you could just weld some pre 73 torsion tubes into that front crossmember and eliminate the rubber mounted add on one...ive repaired rusted sections in earlyr cars, and have had no problems with strength.....i believe that stamped steel auxilery crossmember deflects quite abit...
