This is my first post. I owned a few roadrunners before and am in the market for another one. I went to look at a 69 roadrunner today. The vin stars out with rm23, but the problem is its a post car. I looked in the trunk lip but couldn't find any numbers at all. What do you guys think? somethins up?

couldn't find anything there either.

ROFL mine is an RM23 non post, run like hell, tag swap in progress tell the guy you will take it off his hands and not call the cops for free.

X2 on the rad support sequence numbers from vin there and on fender tag if not then Frankenstein!!

Yeah big surprise no fender tag either. thanks for all the input. It unfortunately confirmed everything I thought the second I saw it. You would think that somebody who was gonna do that would put a little thought into it. Well back to the search, really have my heart set on a 68 runner but would have taken that one.

My .02 cents worth..

The last post by 69Coronetrt is one the most informed members on here and there are a few others by the reply's you got....I have asked 69Coronetrt many, many questions ..He always has a detailed info. Just read some of his older posts...He knows his ****...I to have looked at many 69 Roadrunners and some not so Roadrunner like cars..I own 69RR now..Even the ones I knew were not a true RM21 or RM23 car they still had Radiator support and Trunk lip numbers even if they had non Roadrunners #'s..
Good Luck in your search.. Rick

Sounds like a VIN swap, not a clone. Even a clone would have the R*21 body style code.

find an.

probably a Belvedere with a RM vin, obviously a vin swap with intentions to pass it off as a RR. so in my book its a clone, and with that RM somebody will buy it thinking there getting a RR.

Last year I sold my 68 RoadRunner. I had one guy that thought it was a fake because the #on the fender tag didn't match the VIN. I explained that in 68 it was the SO# on the tag. He was convinced it was a fake. The guy that bought it only checked the VIN on the dash- never even looked to see if it had a tag at all, let alone the core support or trunk #s.
I guess I'm saying someone will get fooled by and buy the car you looked at!

thanks 70RR , If I have any questions I'll keep him in mind. I looked for almost an hour for them in the trunk and rad support. Thought that was very odd as well.

what is the difference on a 68 fender tag?

moparstuart thanks for the info. My next question is on the 68 since they didn't use vin numbers on stampings, if you don't have a fender tag, how else could you i.d it

On 68s the VIN is still on the core support and trunk gutter-the fender tag has the sales order # instead of the VIN. If a 68 doesn't have a tag or buildsheet, it's difficult to verify exactly how it was built, but you can verify that it's a RoadRunner.

It's a little more tricky as VIN swaps are much easier on 68 and before. You could turn an RH21 into an RM21 pretty easy just by pulling the VIN plate from a salvage car and adding RR trim. The VIN tag plant code would have to match the plant code on body stampings.

Bill,

VIN numbers did not appear on the body until '69. You may find the VIN on drivetrain components on a 68 model year car but you won;t find them on the body. 68's still have the year, plant code and body line plus the VON on the radiator and trunk rail.
