Engine Model questions

On a earlier post I mentioned how to determine the model. Members said it would be on the side of the block. Would that be behind the headers? Also, this would be a big issue to me but I was told by the buyer my engine was a 440 and my stepdad is trying to tell me the engine is a 318 or 360. When I looked up the 318 and 360 the engine had the distributor behind the carb. My engine has the distributor on the front by the alternator. When I looked up pics of the 440 and the 383. Those engines looked just like mine. Am I good on not having a 318 and 360? Also is there any differences between the 383 and 440 external wise?

Small block the distributer is behind the carb big block it is on the front next to the alternator,in 69 the engine id is stamped on the flat pad right next to the distributer toward the front of the block,you may have to do a little scraping to see it.

Yes, the 440 has a pad next to the distributor but the modern 383 would not have that pad. The difference is low block (B engine) vs. high block (RB engine).

i would be good on having a 440 or 383 instead of a 318 or 360!! lol

360's (not sure on 318's) have the dipstick on the passenger side and 440's (and probably 383's) have dipstick on drivers side.

Yeah I would definitely of invested in an engine swap. I want the real thing. I hope I see a pad for the 440 engine. Anyways, what you guys are saying if it has that pad it is a 440 engine or a mid late 70s 383?

if it has a pad its a 440 (RB).

i think what Meep meant was because in 1959 and 1960 Chrysler did have a 383 RB (raised block-like all 440's). in 1963 is when the "modern" 383 B that are in the muscle cars came out (no pad).

The 383/400 pad is on the passenger's side below the head next to the distributor.

Boys it says T440 what does this mean(on the pad).

Means it's the big boy, but not built with high performance parts. An HP would indicate this. Probably a Fury/Monaco motor, or truck.

as I understand it, T means truck / industrial. might be another letter before the T440 which indicates the year. Mine is an HT413 - H = 1972 (count up or down from there). Truck 440's are the same, only changes are to bracing and cooling passages (again, as I understand it) and they vary by year, not by car / truck application. heads / intake / pistons / etc might be a different story though. date could be stamped right below the T440, but in any case, find the casting numbers on the block and post them. some one here will decode them for ya.

Boys it says T440 what does this mean(on the pad).

The T may be the engine plant or some other designation as mentioned above, but to me that means it's a mid to late 70's 440. As mentioned, look for the casting date on the side of the block near the motor mount. The 440 in my 66 Belvedere is a 7T440, meaning 1977. My buddy jokes and calls it a Winnebago motor. Well, then he just got beat by a 12 second Winnebago!

The pictures answers the first part. The first T indicates Trenton engine plant. The second T indicates a truck engine. Is there a VIN stamped on the passenger's side of the block?

The second part: depends on the application. Does it matter at this point if you plan on rebuilding it?
