Hey have a 72 with a tired 318 and 727. I am considering a 360 either LA or Magnum to minimize overall costs.

My goals really are a sporty cruiser on the street, maybe a couple runs on the strip a year.

Just searching it seems 360 Magnum are readily available and low cost, but carb intake are not. Also magnum seems to over a tech advantage overall. But what issues come with the going into a b body?

So overall which is the better route in 2025? LA seems easier, but maybe magnum offers a better overall engine?

magnum,all day every day.
the Initial costs are higher than an la 360,BUT the performance versus the la is night and day.
Best way to do this, search your local fb marketplace for a 360 dodge truck thats got a bad tranny, dead rearend, whatever.
you Want to be able to hear the motor Run.

start at 1994 and go up.
buy truck,Keep/strip motor, exhaust, starter, then cash remains of truck out as scrap get money back.
if the truck has Catalytc convertors cut them off and find a buyer locally, should be a coupla hundred back there too.

now,go to ebay,buy a cheap chinese Stealth intake/200 bucks,an Electric fuel pump setup,with regulator,because the magnum block doesnt come with a fuel pump provision,under a 100.
then grab whatever cheapie ignition setup you like,i usually get the whole kit off ebay, cap rotor wires and distributor.
under 200 if you do it right.

use an edelbrock carb if you are just driving it,use a holley street demon if you plan on flogging it.
ive been down this road quite a few times.
keep in mind the stock manifold exhausts arent that great on the trucks, they have a necked down outlet,so get headers if you can,but if not no biggie.

thoughts, ive thrown damm good money at 2 360 builds over the past ten years.
the full monte, along with a decent cam, both cost around 4 Grand to build.
Both make less power than the Stock magnums ive ripped out of trucks and replaced them with.

you Should be right below 300 hp and over 400 lbs of torque, just throwing this thing together with a Stock Cam !!
your wallet is the limit there ;)

and, worst come to worst and the Stock magnum blows up?
go get another one dirt cheap and you arent out the 4 grand or more.

side notes, the magnum from the factory/tbi comes with a Dumb design on the intake manifold.
it uses a tin plate on the bottom of the intake which is Alum, and of course it blows the gasket out and starts eating oil.
Any motor you find is more than likely consuming oil, dont worry about it,youll be swapping a 4bbl intake on.also the heads almost Always Crack between the Seats, this is normal for these heads dont worry about it,just slap them on and run them.

try,to find a halfway decent mileage motor, remember these can come out of Jeeps, durangos, and full size trucks BUT the trucks are the easiest to take apart.
the durangos are a freaking nightmare.

hope any of this helps.

@BeatersRus

Thanks this help out a lot! Maybe a silly question, but are 5.9l and 360 magnum the same engine? I've seen listings for both, but didn't find info about them being a different engine.

yes sir, sorry i shoulda been clearer there,im old so pardon me.
you want the 5.9,and again hear it run before you buy it.
5.2 is gonna be the 318 magnum.
the whole point of doing this is to get in the door cheap for mild fun.
if you decide you want more power, get another magnum later on and go wild :)

also,i forgot to mention the transmission kickdown, use one of them lokar/bouchilon performance/or chinese knockoff Cable setups instead of the factory linkage.
the cheapos are under 30 bucks on amazon.

Tech Tip,when you grab the 5.9 magnum motor,
>> if you buy Just a motor make Absolutely Sure that you get the Factory flywheel/flexplate that was on That motor as its Balanced thru that instead of the torque convertors like the La setup was.
also make sure it isnt bent,as a lot of yards will just plop them things around and bend the crap out of them.
you will not need a new convertor for your trans, but you Will need to Carefully chisel that weight off the convertor face of the vertor you have now.

I didn't read any mention here of that era of 360 magnums having cracked OEM heads. I had two motors with that unpleasant issue.
Takes a bit of the shine away from a cheap motor solution.

Great post, this one thing is the only bit I'd quibble about. The truck manifolds (particularly 92-93) are better than nearly any LA manifolds. The 92-93 flow about the same as the 340HP manifolds. For a cruiser that you don't want to worry about headers leaking, they're a great option.

i actually thought about adding that part in about the better truck ones/92-93 but then hes chasing down yet another set of parts.
Great tip tho.

Too bad you weren't closer. I have a nice 340 built to about 350hp that I will be selling soon, currently in a 1968 B body. Low miles and runs great, just going big block now.

Really appreciate all the info. Found a 1997 Dodge Ram 1500 with a running 360. Has 114k miles.

Would this be an okay year?

Do 5.9 Magnum motors have the ears for motor mounts?
I had a B&M flex plate for using a LA360 with a regular torque converter.
Are you saying the 5.9 flex plate has the balance weight instead of the torque converter?
Sold it and the pieces of 360.

yes,the 5.9 and the 5.2 magnum v8s balance thru that flexplate and must be kept with the motor.
yes they have ears for old style motor mounts, and you can also buy motor mount brackets for the specific bodies if you want to.
yes the 97 is better because by then they had the headcracking thing down to a dull roar.
