383hp/383

Don't know how accurate this site is but it sounds about right to me. Back when I bought my 70 Challenger, I had no idea on how much different horse power levels there were as it was my first experience with a stock 383. My first 383 that I dropped into a 66 Belvedere wasn't stock. This was back in 70. My first Challenger was a 72 340 Rallye that I bought in 74 then a whole slue of Challengers followed...mostly all were 70 models.

Ok. I'd like to see what a blueprinted to the nth degree 383 Magnum would do. With the deck height where it's supposed to be, instead of like .060" high on one side and .072" high on the other. Head chambers blueprinted to spec, cam degreed in...all that stuff. Get everything where it's supposed to be. There'd be a lotta tire smoke.

I got one you can start with...........

with an infuses on PILE OF CASH..LOL...

Here's a few more examples.......................................................... according to advertisement figures..................................................... 67 Belvedere 383 2bbl 270hp/390tq, optional 383 4bbl 325hp/425tq............ 67 Barracuda 383ci 4bbl 280hp/400tq, 68 Barracuda it jumped to 300hp...... 68 383ci 4bbl RR & Super Bee 335hp/425tq... 68 Charger 383ci 2bbl 290hp...... as you can see the 383ci engine runs the gamut in different HP/TQ spec.'s, allot depends on what car & what carb chioces, they had variuos different camshaft & cylinder head choices too either open chamber after mid 67 w/68 model year or 67 & earlier closed chamber large valve &/or small valve, 66 was even lower rated in some model...

Send it and a pile of cash and I'll do it and document the whole thing. I can even have it dynoed.

I think one of the Mopar rags already did it for us but Im sure there are plenty of folks around here that remember how their original 383s ran

No original 383 ran like I'm talkin about. None of them were blueprinted to spec from the factory. Not a single one.

You are preaching to the choir. I agree.

My uncles 68 barracuda with a 3.91 gear, 9 inch K mart slicks and a his 383 with a purpleshaft and "smoothie" nitrous kit in it went 11.80s in the 80s if I remember right....>MEEP MEEP will know exactly. I do know it was an original 383 68 big block car.

First nitrous run I ever made I think I was 8 or 9 and I was hooked on it until my first boosted car (21).......now I am back to just wanting to cruise and I am only 36. Go figure.

What year are you talking about? 66-67?

Horse power rating of the 383 bounced all over the place over the years and also depended on what body the car was in. There is a lot of confusion here with the 383-2 ratings which really has nothing to do with the OPs original question which I believe was the difference between the 330 and 335 h.p. engines. Doug (69coronet R/T) nailed it all down in his post.

Sticking with just the 383-4 (which I think the vast majority of the membership here is interested in) they were rated from 300-335. The A body cars with the 383-4 were rated the lowest with 300 h.p.

Now this does not include the EARLY 383s which were a different block built back in the late 50s and early 60s which some had factory dual quads and I believe were rated around 350 h.p. but I have limited knowledge with the pre 1966 cars.

11.84 @ 120 on 70 series 14" street tires at Fremont Raceway. Factory 383 A body manifolds with water pipe cut outs welded into the pipe just past the flange. That run was with my old set of 915 heads and he ran a .474" hemi grind cam, torker and 750 Vac secondary Holley - and a cooler behind the drivers seat full of Schmidt beer. Car was an original 67 383 S Barracuda in faded light yellow. The TF was not rebuilt but he put a B&M manual pack in it and ran a 318 converter. Later he got 8.5" slicks and at a different track it was consistent 12.20's on the juice. I got to take it for a ride once with the N2O and I was convinced that stuff works! Charles Richard Ibbeson may you rest in peace.
