hello, I bought my 70 charger with the nss bypassed, dangerous yes, but it always started. I installed a new engine wiring harness and replaced some old fried starter relay wires, now the car wont turn over via the key but will when I short the starter relay. Do you think the problem is the missing nss connection? I got rid of the jury rigged wire that was used to bypass the nss

Here's how these work. Your firewall / fender mount starter relay looks something like this:

In the photo, we are concerned with the two "push on" terminals at the top of the photo. One of them should have the yellow/ yellow tracer wire coming from the bulkhead which is the "start" power from the ignition switch. You can check this by clipping a test lamp/ meter to the yellow, and twist the key to start. It should be hot ONLY in "start."

So hook that wire on EITHER of the two relay terminals. Now use a clip lead to ground the remaining push-on terminal, and the car should crank, but in any gear

The NSS wiring on a 70 should be a 3 wire harness that runs from the transmission, up over the trans, behind the rear of the engine and up near the bulkhead connector. The two outside terminals of the switch go through the bulkhead and to the backup lights. The CENTER pin of the NSS is the one that hooks to the second terminal of your NSS

DO YOU have a factory shop manual or at least a good wiring diagram?

Hey RoadRunner, Thanks for your answer. I do have a service manual. I just got back from the garage, I used an old wire as a ground from the relay to the block and it cranked by the key, so it is the relay to nss connection. too bad theres no junk yards with oldies, we just have 90's to present junkers. you should see all the semis with crushed cars, some 50's a crap load of 70's cars

So you're makin progress. I'm not absolutely sure, but I think you can buy those NSS connectors at parts stores, like NAPA. They used 'em for about a thousand years, from 68-69 or whenever they went to three terminal up into the late 80's?? 90's??

No idea what NAPA would call it. I'd tell them you have about a 77 Dodge Van, a B200 with 360 and see if they can come up with one, only because their listings that far back may be AFU

good idea, tried to make one using a big butt connector but it wouldnt stay on the nss pin

Move the plug wires over one spot and re-set the timing

i got mine rigged up on a butt connector also...no NSS hooked up tho....just the back-up lights. its staying on but id rather have it done the right way and ill be hookin' up the NSS as soon as it gets here!. Lone Eagle was good enuff to offer me one but i just cant seem to get away long enuff for an hour drive.....crawl under a car....and drive another hour back.. i appreciate his offer tho !

i figgered i was not the only one in need of this so i dug it up on my buddy KENL's Ebay store.:headbang:

to make it easy :

the middle wire goes to the starter relay connection( with the clamp like thing)
the 2 end ones go to the back-up lights! (one from power...other to the lites)

I used to disconnect my NSS so I could have more 'fun' with the car. Jump in, floor it, hit the key and instant tire smoke! Scared the crap out a my neighbor once when I did that lol
