This is what America was once capable of without machinery or automation. Just blood, sweat and tears. I am confident we can have those capabilities again.

Unfortunately, nowadays the majority of americans are fat, lazy slobs that think the world/guberment owes them a free ride...

Me and 3 friends once drank 14 cases of beer over a 4th of July weekend.
Does that count as greatness and the American spirit?...LOL

That reminds me of another great American project. There is a ditch dug all the way across NY state. Roughly from Buffalo to the hudson. It's called the Erie Canal and was dug by hand and shovel lined with limestone with many aquaducts. It enabled us to go from the great lakes to the New York harbor without having to go to up around maine to get there.

:iamwithstupid: How about the "Interstate Highway system" we all know & use now, implemented by Pres. Dwight D. Eisenhower, it was originally thought of because of him seeing the Autobahn in Germany fighting WWII & he wanted to be able to mobilize the/our Military at any time or state, at ease.... "now there was a truly great leader", I know I know it was the taxpayers money, but allot of private industry financed it too... How about the "Golden Gate Bridge"... Also how about "going to the moon landing & returning to earth", with in a decade goal, from beginning to end... I know, I know, we had a bunch of Govt. & taxpayers money thrown at it too & a bunch of Germans Scientists from WWII, that were defectors from their rocket development programs, that helped the program along, just like Little Man & Fat Boy projects that helped to end WWII, I know I know at the expense of Japan... But it was all the "American Spirit" & the great leadership & of course that, "we can do anything type mentality, to reach for the stars", that got the job done, remember Pres. JFK's quote, "ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country", there's a very, very large percentage of the country, that thinks just the complete opposite now.... my $0.02 cents

Eisenhower was also incredibly outspoken against the "military industial complex" threat we are living in today.
...also ,Eisenhower is unquestionably a German name, yet no one questioned his patriotism during WWII, as was done to thousands of Japanese citizens.

For the record, railroads and locomotives are the epitome of machinrey and automation.

The true American innovation and contribtion to history is...the "middle" class, which is currently under attack from both the left and the right.

...and don't forget staving off tyranical social-fascism in the 1940's

...and let's not forget that "freedom of speech" thing!!!

Peace!!

No way can we do this today. Back then it was completely different, no EPA, etc.. Just saying in general, but if a project of similar magnitude like the first bomb was going to be built today it would seemingly take a lifetime. For example, we have been working on a new Bay Bridge for 20 yrs and it's still not done - and that is just the eastern span!!!

Correct built by Dwight Eisenhower

I know I miss-spelled his name...Dooooh, damn computers & spell check

The railroads were started mostly by the filthy rich, to expand the west, then latter on with more very wealthy entrepreneurs, like Rockefeller & Carnage to ship &/or supply their goods, for/from Westinghouse/US Steel & Standard Oil or others, easily & quickly to all parts of the USA, then be able to monopolize the industry, to grow their vast wealth... they're the epitome of capitalism, can do spirit too... They at least contributed to our countries growth & expansion, especially the west, beyong the Mississippi, they expanded employment, even for allot immigrants like the Irish & Chinese labor were paid, some not so well thou, but they we in a free country finally, all thou it was a while latter, even the establishment of Union Labor eventually, when they were forced too.... How about the American Auto Industry when it was in it's early stages, that was really a strugle... How About Wilbur & Orville Wright "inventing the airplane" or "the 1st sustained flight" atleast.... The founding Fathers were the best example, the Establishment of the United States of American, the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution & the Bill of Rights.... The giving/taking of lives in-order to, free the slaves in the South/Confederacy during & after the Civil war, by the North/Union Army, The Emancipation Proclamation too... Giving women the Right to vote...

Merry Christmas

it's an old thought

some of you guys aren't going to like this but, years ago truck driving, usually all night, 3-4-5 of us guys would run together and yak all night on the radio. i can remember hearing this more than once. if the feds implemented a .10 cent a gallon tax on all fuel sales in america, and could prove it went to an exact project without a pile of red tape, ie: roads, bridges, etc. you pick the project. could you believe the gazillion's of dollars raised for that project in a short time. it's going to raise an outcry that will be heard on the moon but if it's proven to work you would adjust. what are you going to do, quit driving. i think not.
i have always thought this is something "america is capable of".

p.s. think about this in the middle of the next bridge you are crossing. back then it was guesstimated that 70-80% of all bridges in america weren't safe with Connecticut being at the top of the list.
it's a prime situation for a pres on his last term.
x
watch the **** hit the proverbial fan now lol and i am not even american
