78 Cordoba with a 83 904 lock up
I have gotten the trans done today and filled it with fluid. Took it out on aa test run it drove great and shifted fine. I had one noise that was bothering me. To me sounds like something is hitting the inspection plate. Maybe someone here can confirm this?

Really poor audio but I think I hear it. That's what it sounds like. That sure is a nasty *** transmission to be "new". What happened to the Charger you were workin on?

I still have the Charger I am trying to figure a way to get my building wired so I can use my new welder.

It's not new I bought it off CL but it had been rebuilt before I got it. It shift great and like it should. It doesn't make any noise in park a little in gear but in neutral it is the loudest. I think the torque converter bolt is hitting the big inspection plate

If its the dust shield hitting, it shouldnt matter what gear its in or in park. Regardless, you could removed the cover to rule it out, but it seems odd it comes and goes depending on shifter location. Its definitely coming from the bellhousing right???? Not the tailshaft area i hope.

Yes it coming from the bell housing. We are going to pull the small cover off and I will be turning the engine over by hand to check the TQ bolts. Other than that I don't know what it could be. I idled the carb down in the morning and I will do another video

if it was a constant rattle in every gear i would guess a converter bolt . maybe the plate is rattling idk. it does seem odd it comes and goes

Well the only time you don't hear it is when it is in Park. But you can hear it in each gear and it's the loudest in neutral. It shifts great even when I downshift then upshift again no problems. It even locks up the TQ at 40mph

If the crankshaft thrust bearing has a ridiculous amount of wear, that could account for the differences in different gear selections.......but I doubt that's the case.

I hope that isn't the case. The 318 only has 126,000 miles on it.

The only reason i ask is my first thought after reading the description of the concern is a bent parking pawl. Hope that is not the case.

The parking pawl is inside the trans. Its what holds the car from rolling away when you put it in park. Its a rod that attaches to what is called the rooster comb, and slides into a gear that mounts on the output shaft. Column shift or floor shift does not matter. Ever accidentally thrown a car in park when its still moving? that noise, kind of the same noise in the video, is the sound the parking pawl mechanism makes when you do that.

But ya know what, Im a dumbass. in order for that to be the case the output shaft would have to be turning. If the wheels are not turning it isn't the problem.:eusa_think:

Dude, just drop the lower cover off and bust it off. That's probably all it is.

what he said. First thing I would do is use a screwdriver and press on the shield when its running, see if that changed the noise or if you can actually feel something hitting it. Try and find anything and everything possible on the outside before having to go inside.Look at converter bolts and shield for anysigns of contact. Look very closely at flex plate too. they can develop cracks and make knocking noises too.

We will take the small plate off first and check the bolts before taking anything apart. Thanks for all the help and I will report what we find or don't find.

Well I wanted to update every one on the trans issue, it was the big plate it is beat all to hell.Here is some pictures but I really don't know how much it will show.
