This is my first rodeo and I have been flying by the seat of my pants. I didn't do a whole lot of planning, just jumped in and learned some lessons along the way. However, I am almost there, but I am lost when it comes to wiring. All I need to do is replace the damaged wires, and I can turn the key. So this is where I am at: 440 stroked, with everything striped off and I went with a ready-to-run MSD distributor. I want to replace the dried out wires. I have new wires and new 56 series terminals and replacement connector to plug in the bulkhead, so all I need to know is what wires do I have to run, at the minimum to turn this beast over? I hear I must still use the voltage regulator and starter relay, but what about the ballast resistor and seatbelt interlock? I don't have the interlock, but the wires from interlock plug run to the engine bulkhead plug. So, do I just connect the yellows or ? Any advice would be appreciated. If you live in the Glendale Az area, I will supply the beers for a little tutoring? I included a couple pictures. Thanks in advance !!!

Hey Big G, I'm originally from Glendale, AZ and visit there about once a year. Try to catch a Cards game when I do. As far as some of your questions I can answer them. I'm not a know it all Mopar guy but from the pics your car is a '71 or better. To be honest you might be better off buying a reproduction harness from Classic Industries or YO. That's what I did and it made it a whole lot easier to wire in aftermarket things since I knew I had a good base to work off of.

Whether or not you have to use the voltage regulator will be determined by your alternator, is it internally regulated? If so pull the VR off the firewall, you don't need it but you will need a sense wire ran for the internally regulated alternator to know what kind of power your car has at all times.

Does the manufacturer of your coil tell you it needs a full 12v? If so pull the ballast resistor off the firewall and bypass the wires.

I don't know about a seatbelt interlock my car is a '69 a doesn't have it but basically to turn a car over you'll need fuel, fire, and compression. So any wiring that inhibits your fire or spark you'll need hooked up.

Also a word of advice, I just fired my motor for the first time and broke it in by myself with one of my friends. Neither of us had done anything like that before. If you are breaking it in make sure you check and double check things. You don't want to be messing with the motor cranking it endless amounts of time with a fresh cam. Not only is it depressing to not see your motor fire when you were hoping it would but it is also supposed not be good for the cam. I spend about 3 hours and a total of maybe 30 minutes of crank time and my cam was fine so there is some lee way there.

I honestly would take that dried up wretched pile of spaghetti mess under the hood and toss it in the garbage can..Could be a fire or a break down waiting to happen. I believe you can buy a new engine harness for that car or find a good used one and make a couple modifications to suite your MSD ignition.

follow props links for sure,he is almost always correct.biggest thing would be to learn how to read a wiring diagram.once you can do that it will be no prob at all.if you cant make heads or tails of the wiring diagram, get some help.no need to burn down your ride by saving a few bucks.

Thanks everyone for the responses! I am recruiting some help and hopefully will have it running soon. Basko in Gilbert built the motor and I installed it. We dyno'd it on the stand, before I put it back in so start-up should not be an issue. Now It's just my small brain and all those wires! Thanks again!
