Anyone have a good 440 HP block they want to part with? I'd like a 1968-71 one if possible.

....I sort of posted this before I got more educated about the myth of the 440 HP stamped block. Initially I thought there was some performance modification that made HP-HP2 blocks magical in some way, but after going to the 440 Source site, I have revised my thinking....a lot. I spent Saturday driving around and getting pics of some local folks and the engines that they thought were Six Pack/ R/T motors ect, and priced them accordingly.....I'll post a few pics on one that the guy wants like 1k for.....with a big piece missing from the #3 bore. I read that the normal 440 block is externally balanced while the 440HP blocks were internally balanced, is this true?
 
On the Kansas City craigslist, there are usually 3 to 4 running 440's at any one time for less than $1000.

Nope. I've seen/had mid-70's cast crank HP 440 motors.
HP and non-HP blocks are the same. HP blocks got different cam, springs, carb, e-manifolds, dist for the most part and a windage tray was usually included. Some HP's got a different oil pan depending on year.
Only reason to pay "extra" for an HP block is if you want a correct year and HP motor for a restro job.

Nope. There are differences between early and late blocks, but mostly ribbing, and bracing. Cast cranks are externally balanced, forged are internally balanced. Either will swap right into any year RB block (so long as it's an RB crank of course).

Some say the later blocks are a bit better because of the increased bracing, but really doesn't matter unless you're pushing some big horsepower.

And there were changes to cooling passages I believe in later blocks, but again, never heard it matter much at all.

I run a Motor home 440. Its a 77 and basicly just useing the Block . You can get them cheap and are in all the older winebagos !!
Unless you crawling under the car when the motors is or restoreing a #'s car save your cash and put it where you can feel it :downtown:

Not all forged cranks were internally balanced.
 
Really? Not arguing at all, but I've never heard that.


All 70/71 440HP and 6PK engines are steel crank,externally balanced.
 
Ok, partially true. The rods were the part that needed that little eccentric on the balancer, not really the crank. But true enough.
 
watch out for the 74 and later model blocks if you are going 4-speed, on many of them the crank is not drilled for a manual trans. I already drilled 2 of them while in the car

There is one (1967)over on moparts posted Saturday (on pg 3)

D440 HP standard bore short block assembly, assembly date 7-6, cast date 4-19-67 $750 mrmopar or 9-5 pm Mon-Fri Ohio

I have a complete 1969 440 short block (no heads / intake), PM if interested.
 
.......well I found a block about 100 miles from me and snagged it! 1970 HP2 stamp, crank and all the goodies.....just to haul it back to my guy at the machine shop and find out.......it's got a crack in it. Freeze crack. Lord, the mopar gods beat my butt on this one. ....still looking.

hp blocks were for GTX/R/T cars and had 25 more HP than the non hp...difference was ,in 67, heads/cam...68 it was mainly the cam...structurally they are the same..but people like HP blocks in their GTX/R/T cars
