LED Dash Lights - Different Approach

Hey All,

Instead of just getting LED replacement bulbs for the dash lights the guy doing my wiring wanted to try using strip lighting around the perimeter to give a better light. We ordered a 5 metre strip from Classic Industries and used about 1.5 m to give you an idea

That was just lit up bench tested. The plan is to still be able to dim it.... one way or another if that means swapping out to a different dimmer style as I believe I saw in one of Propwash's earlier posts.

You can definitely order the rope lighting in different colours I know for sure blue is one of them. I'm pretty sure there is also an available style with a controller where you can change colours or actually set it to rotate through colours.

I just wanted mine to be nice and bright... Looks like that was achieved!! lol

Once it's all buttoned back up and through the dimmer I'll get some more pics in this thread

These are like the lights I got for my dash. Blue, or any colour you could desire plus different brightness settings, all by remote control. If you get tired of blue, you could pick amber or white or anything else.

I had it installed for testing, but am waiting for a couple of dash parts. I've taken pictures, and will put them up when I'm done.

How were the lights secured in the gauge cluster?

i would double check but i was aware that LED lights flicker when you dim them am i right or wrong here?

Yes benno, if you use your factory dimmer switch, led's flicker. I had this problem when I was restoring the instrument panel in my 72 Cheyenne. But along with the dimmer you can find on ebay for the led strips, Auto Meter makes a dimmer module (p/n 9114) that worked great for my application. http://www.autometer.com/cat_accessoriesdetail.aspx?vid=185

Mine have been fine but I think that's to do with using the strip lighting instead of just bulbs so there's enough resistance
