Number 3

I agree.
Alot of people are saying Pettys' 43 should be retired, however, it is he that controls that number right now. Also, Pearson and someone elses number were also mentioned earlier. I don't agree with that YET. Remember,at the time, Earnhardt was the big name in the sport, and he died. So, maybe that plays into it alot with me.

yeah it's better/best known as Dale Sr.'s #, but allot of drivers have used it, even Jr. Johnson had #3 before Richard Childress ever even raced, many others too

yup, Earnhardt won his first championship with the #2

So, Childress has a "LEASE" on the number and it is soon to expire?
WOW, didnt know that!

Numbers are owned by NASCAR and renewed yearly. Owners make a request for numbers every year and those numbers are assigned to the owner's license. Basically, Childress continued to request and pay for the #3 every year since Earnhardt's death. Because of the sensitivity that surrounded the number, family ties, etc. NASCAR agreed to continued giving it back to Childress. It had gotten to the point where other owners were beginning to inquire about the number. Generally, if a team is using a number, NASCAR has always reissued the number to them. However, Childress hadn't been using the number in Sprint, so it was becoming a concern that there may become a conflict over the number. Fortunately, Dillon turned out the way he did and the they moved him up to retain the number.

Did you know that 02 is actually 102, but since they only display two numbers the car is marked as 02.

Great pic of Junior Johnson's #3 Holly farms Poultry 63 Cheverollet car Budnicks!
I remember seeing the Holly Farms cars on ABCs Wide World Of Sports coverage of Nascar back in the day.
Now, that was some "Racin"

I think Holly Farms ran a yellow car two....

No I didn't actually know that, thanks, I learn something new every day.... so essentially NASCAR can have basically 110#'s then, interesting we had 3 digit #'s when I was racing USAC sprint cars, back in the late 70's early 80's even a letter designation if 2 cars had a same # for the city/track you had as home/points track, sorry I had a bad experiences, with a cheap a$$ Bros. in law & PG&E work partners as owners...LOL... Anyway, I wonder why NASCAR doesn't do that, simplicity I guess, easier on announcers for sure, they only have 43 cars to field don't need all 110 #'s 00-109... hummmmm

I want to apoligize for my part in that skirmish. I took it like one would if a friend razzed you and you said :you prick;. After all I did say Marlin gave him some of his own medicine which was a playful jab.Didnt know he,d go off the deep end.Sorry, I,d like to see the three run again. I can hear the ghostof Earnhart comments already anytime the 3 does anything good.Hell theres already one at every Saturday night track across the country.

A lot of Earnhardt fans tend to be that way. It's like they've got nothing left to root for and they hate the world for it. If Jr. would have turned out to better, or at least won a championship, I think they would be less bitter.

Those are some mighty big shoes to fill !! I'm not a big Jr. fan, but he's his own man... he should have got the Big E's DEI company majority, it's his name sake after all, things may have gone a little differently he was doing relatively good until then, but instead the wife Teressa E./his step mother got it & he had to choose to go to Hendricks, uncomfortable for sure & it's a damn shame & I'm NOT even a big Jr. fan...

I totally agree. I don't care what anyone says, the three or four car team thing doesn't work and it's diluting the sport.

Ok, here's some trivia. What MOPAR did dale earnhart drive and what was the number. The winner will get a promise from me that I won't call them a prick. LOL

He drove a Charger in 75 or 76. Don't know the number. 8 maybe?

As a Yankee fan, I say to hell with retiring numbers. Let's see a kid come up with the balls to wear #3. We'll chear like mad if he does the number respect.

I think you may see that. This kid ain't bad and with the team he'll be with, there will be plenty of support. I already like what I've seen from him....

maybe I'll come on down to bama
For some reason Im afraid to answer my door now. Those Jahova Witnesses are announcing that they are coming now. But really if Nascar starts retiring numbers then eventually most cars will have a three digits on the door. Does anyone remember when Kyle Petty drove the 7/11 car but it had 21 on the door. I wonder if Nascar has a rule against 3 digit numbers now. I know early drivers had them.
