WTB Slant Six Starter

Hello I am looking for a starter for a 1963 B body for a slant 6. These starters have only 9 teeth on the gear drive. I am not sure if the American starters are the same or not. i only need it to get my car running and mobile as I have plans for a big block in the near future.Thank you for your time.Jeds67

Get a mini one for you're headders for the big block if you think you will run them...

A couple things I've found regarding starters-

1- some "mini" starters have a protrusion on the nose that will not allow it to fully seat.
It's a wedge shape (IIRC) partially covering the gear.

2- Some OEM style full size starters have a longer casting around the nose bearing that makes them about 3/32 longer, and again, not fully seat in some bell housings.

Both issues can be solved with a little time on the band saw and/or grinder.

I've also seen starters that have a slightly longer main case.
Depending on your headers (if you have them), the longer case can actually touch them, which can't be good, long term.

I'm not sure if there are reman part issues, or if there really is a difference in OEM builds.
I'm pretty sure the mini nose and the main case are documented elsewhere, but last year is the first I've run in to the bearing casting issue.

It is possible that some Canadian cars still came with the prestolite cast iron starter, hense the description difference. Owner should confirm this. US readers may not have known of this, and jumped to conclusions.

check if you have cast iron ;in 63 you must have a cast iron starter,if it the case the alum starter dont fit,if you need a cast iron starter i have one $15 plus shipping

Thanks moparcuda. It is the cast iron starter.If I am not mistaken they are made by Prestolite. My nephew has found one in Manitoba so if that one doesn't pan out I will be in touch. Thanks again. Jeds67

Not a true statement...Early 60s slants had a direct drive starter. Like this:

That's why I'm reluctant to go to a mini-

I LIKE the Mopar starter sound.

...and torsion bars.

...and even left hand lug nuts.

I like to retain one left hand lug on the rear corner jut to keep it interesting... some shops won't believe it..

Right now I have some different Mopar starters. Different armature length, different gear ratios. Not to mention the Hemi direct drive starters. There are differences.

Also, if the OPs 1963 was built in Canada, it will have a Prestolite direct drive. Direct Drive starters have 9 teeth, so it's likely that this is what is needed. It's hard to find, I believe Prestolite lists it as 'discontinued'.
There might be some places that carry it for marine applications, but from here it's hard to tell what the original part numbers are.

JEDS67, is your starter missing, or just needing a rebuild? You can probably still get parts for it.

I just found a used one in Manitoba but I am not sure what condition it is in. Hopefully it will last for a little while. While we are on the subject here is a question. Will the newer fly wheel bolt to a 225 crankshaft? If that works I could do that and put in the mini starter.
