rear main seal leak stop

Sent you the list of places Iwould go locally Jim.
I did the rear main on my 73 - 400 with a friend, but it was out of the car, on a stand and turned around so we wern't working upside down. What a bi*ch it was to get out. It was the old rope style and got replaced with the newer rubber style one. We did just as was described earlier with out pulling the crank. Getting the new one in is cake, the old one out ... not something I would want to try to do on my back or upside down.
Call Jim, he's an old school guy.

Oh yeah, I'd forgotten about the special tool. Chrysler actually had a tool with a screw like end to screw into the rope seal to yank it out.
You also most of the time have to turn the crank.
We used a screwdriver that was for making holes in wallboard with a threaded end and point. We struggled at first but once it started, it came out.

The shop that quoted that you need to remove the crank has little knowledge of big block Mopars.......or is either trying to make as much money as possible. I've done one seal job in the chassis and yeah, it sucks.

BTW I have also done this on 3 mopars and 2 fords...they can all be done the same way without crank pull. No special tools. Just follow the explaination above...drop center link, oil pan, remove rear cap, take out old, stagger new seal 3/8 inch from machined cap seats put it back and off you go.
