Every state has different rules... but most have away where you send it off to DMV they authenticate the plate and through special exception you can run the original plate...

For example Florida... the 10 indicates Broward county the W/W is for passenger cars under 4500 pounds then the registration # a 1967 model year requires a plate validation for that year.... in my case a W which is for under 3500 pounds would be more exactly appropriate and my car was originally registered in St.Petersburg not in broward where I live.... but its the happiest medium I found.. the state may allow any plate with the correct date.. but a motorcyce or trailer or semi tractor or something else may be allowed would look off.... I may never run the plate but its cool wall art or for a show.... just another thing to think about... and for the outlaws it wouldn't ever get stopped... from what I was told anyway because I would never knowingly break the law... LOL

My state of Kansas does this as well, so I have been looking for vintage plates for my cars. I have two mint complete date runs from 1964 to 1975 for my county, with spares except for the 1968 plates. For whatever reason, that particular year is rare to find here. I put a bounty of $50 a plate for that year with my county on it for over ten years before I found two at an local farm auction in a pile of plates (large tub full). I bought the whole pile for $120, which included plates clear back into the early 1920s. One of the competing bidders bought a 1932 plate out of the pile for $100 from me, guess that was the one he was after for his car. There were two more 1932s in there, but he just wanted one of them....

In Ohio on a collector car you can register any plate of the year of manufacture. It is so cool to have a 1970 plate on the car.

I got 69 plates on y car,Maryland just charges you an extra fee and they give you a new registration card that does not expire,Keep the historic stickered tags that need renewed every other year in the trunk.

Maryland has some of the most expensive plates a low number is desirable.. in the current system everyone wants to be #1. or an antique senator or representative

I've got a 69 for my Runner already. Just have to get the car on the road. There's the problem.
And I got a 67 for my son's Charger.
Georgia had a system too.
Finding one is compromise between what county you are in now, what county the car came from, weight, condition and price.

I think you have to have a current tag in the car with paperwork if you are stopped. That's down the road for us though.

Anyone know what the do in CA for collector plates? Mine currently have the MN plates on them that I paid a one time fee of $25 for and good for the life of the car. But I'll be soon shipping the car out to CA as I live hear now.

You didn't do that for living did you Bumperman! I hear that's an occupation in some of the Big Houses.......

Pennsylvania allows antique tags as well (very recent law). It's an extra $75 registration fee but you only register once and it is good for life (on classics and antiques). Altogether, I think it cost $200 because I had to register as a classic car. Only caveat is that the tag must be from the year of manufacture and must have a valid registration sticker from that year. I must say, I do love the look of antique tags. Tag only cost $15

In Colorado this can be done at no cost? Atleast until Gov Hichentaxer finds out. You do need to provide proof of insurance, have current plates, the vintage plates must be year of manufacture of the vehicle, must have both plates, you have to send pictures or show DMV the plates are in good condition. Must keep one of the current registerd plates in the vehicle to show law enforcement if they stop you for anything. That said I really lucked out on finding the 2 sets I have on my 70 E bodys they are consectively numbered 3064 and 3065 and the prefix which used to be a county designation is my initials JC.

Someone could make a fortune repoping old plates to match... and antique vanity plates... there is a buisness opportunity somewhere.....

Doesn't take being a cop to know making license plates is risky. There's probably a good likelihood that you are repopping a license plate that may already be registered.

End up making them for the state getting caught making them... someone has had to gotten out of prizon and bought a plate they made as an inmate...
