Does anyone know the Max amount of bore wear or taper before u have to bore out the cylinder? Wanting to know if I can just re-ring the factory size pistons engine in car still

I've gone with as much as .005" before on a small block and it ran great and didn't use any oil. How much do you have and how much taper? Ridge? 40 years ago guys used to ream out the ridge and dingle berry hone the cylinders and slap new rings in and go but the better the build, the longer it'll last and the better it'll run.

I haven't measured it yet but the walls dont look bad I used a caliper quickly to measure the top of cylinder but must be carbon or something cause it measured 3.890???? I was told motor had about 70,000 miles on it it is a 78 block I believe

Uh...I can assure you that some still do that now. In fact, I call it the "low buck" rebuild. ;)

Cranky, that description of a re-ring brings back memories. I rebuilt the engine in my first car ('73 charger) that way. Pulled the engine with a chain hoist hung in a big walnut tree! I was 15. Amazingly, it ran pretty good. Good times...

once i see .0035...start over.

If it's just a get it down the road motor, non performance, who cares...dingle ball my darling and get on!

where do u guys take the measurements at in the bore I know the ring travel area but I mean like bottom middle and top? what tool do you guys use?

Yup...top, middle and bottom and use an inside mic. Also have a dial bore gauge.

Bore gauge will get used once or twice. Inside micrometer set will get used over and over. Over .008 taper then rebore oversize.

This is from 70 factory Dodge shop manual.

Cylinder Bore lnspection
The cylinder walls should be checked for out-of round
and taper with Tool C-119. If the cylinder bores
show more than .005” out-of-round, or a taper of more
than .010”, or if the cylinder walls are badly scuffed
or scored, the cylinder block should be rebored and
honed, and new pistons and rings fitted. Whatever
type of boring equipment is used, boring and honing
operation should be closely coordinated with the fitting
of pistons and rings in order that specified clear
