So I'm trying to figure out what ratio rear I've got in my 73 RR 400 4sp, mark the tire, mark the drive shaft. I spun the driver's side tire, only one wheel is turning! Any ideas? I expected to see both tires spin in the same direction if it were a sure grip, opposite directions if it's an open rear. Can a rear fail and still work? I had no noise, no vibration on the 9 hour ride home with the car. Thanks!

Im afraid you just have an open differential, there is always a chance the rear end could fail but more then likely its just not a sure grip...

I've seen lots of Sure Grip equipped rear ends that were so worn out that they didn't grab anymore. Another way to check the ratio is to turn one wheel and count the drive shaft turns and divide by 2. Always heard that works but never tired it myself. You could also have someone turn the other wheel while you turn one. You should be able to tell what you have if you both turn the wheels together.

Anyway, to answer your question: "Im just trying to find out what ratio"
1. Jack rear of car up.
2. Spin tire "ONE" revoloution and count how many times the drive-shaft spins.

This will give you a "ball park "
For instance: 2:73 to 1 = the tire rotated 1 turn and the drive-shaft rotated 2:73 times...

3 tire rotations to 55 drive shaft rotations = 3.55 ratio gears etc.

Huh? I always thought it would be 3.55 drive shaft rotations to one rotation of the wheel
