Hi,

I have a thing that's driving me crazy and I thought I'd vent to fellow B body fanatics like myself. I've had my RR for over 10 years now and she has just sat and took a backseat to my other automotive obsessions. It is an original 4 speed car that someone it it's lifetime decided to bastardize it by installing a Auto. Nothing wrong with a 727, but not in an original 4 speed car! So over the years I've worked on her here and there whenever I get the fever. Long story short, I bought a 4 speed from a car show about 7 years ago along with a Bell housing off of eBay. Back then I didn't decipher my fender tag because the resources were limited and I think what people wanted then was a bit much, especially when all the info is free online nowadays. So I have a 383 HP engine and I want to Resto-Rod my car. But I want to keep things original with the exception of go fast parts. I bought a 10.5 inch everything, flywheel, clutch & pressure plate not knowing that it was suppose to have an 11 inch set up from the factory. So Should I just sell my 4 speed (1972) set up and buy the correct 1968 set up or keep what I have and run it? That's what's bugging me.

Did your 10-1/2" flywheel come with the 11" pressure plate? All 72 440 4 SPD's can with that combo and will work fine behind your 383. If it did use it and forget about the heavier cast bell housing and flywheel.

I pieced my set up together. I don't know what came originally on the car because there was a Automatic in it when I got it. But I assume that it came with the 11 inch setup from the factory.

Did your engine originally come with a 4spd? If not the crankshaft hole is not deep enough for a manual trans input shaft and will have to be drilled 5/8" deeper. Do not go any deeper than 5/8" or the oil gallery in the crank will be drilled into.

The Engine is the original one for the car. So it has a pilot bushing installed properly.

My 1970 Road Runner with original 383 and 4 speed has a 10.5" bell housing and flywheel. I didn't know that 68's had 11 inch flywheels on the 383s. I thought only the 440+6 (69 & 70) and Hemi's had the 11 inch, but obviously I could be wrong.

At any rate, my 70 has the 10.5, and it works just fine, thank you very much. If you have all the 10.5 inch parts, why not use them? They will work fine with a decent clutch. IMHO, no reason to spend lots of money changing this unless you are going for tons of power or a concourse restoration...

I think I'd going to just reinstall my A833. I'd like to find the original one but that I think would be next to impossible. So for now, the 10.5" set up will be going back in. I was having issues with it going into reverse, but that has since cleared up somehow from being on the bench. Internally iy looks likle new, gears look great, syncro's look good. So, gotta repaint it and slap her back in. Thanks for the replies.
