In addition to the firing order thread and thank you for the help,i was thinking of using the perTronix Ignitor ignition, instead of points. I used there product years back on another engine with excellent results and my car had there ignition in it when i bought it originally. The car sat for close to five years, three uncovered upstate NY in the mountains. I cranked the engine over and it started so i have alot of faith in Pertro products. What do you guys think about using it and is the Ignitor 2 the right way to go---Thanks-----BTW summit has it for 115 with free shipping---thanks again

I'm running 2 of them and have no problems. I think they are a great, clean, easy alternatives to a Elec. upgrade. A new Coil is your call but I've been fine with the old one, but I'm sure it wouldn't hurt.

Ignitor II is improved. It will not burn out if you should leave the key on with engine not running. That is what I use in all of my points-replacement applications.

I recently replaced the points and went with the Ignitor II, and the Flame thrower II coil. No issues as of yet!

I am running the Ignitor III and their Flamethrower III coil..I love it!

Right after purchasing my Coronet which still had a point-type distributor I replaced it with a FT distributor and FT III coil - eliminates the ballast resistor. If you go with the FT coil increase the spark plug gap to 45 thou.

I only drove the car a couple hundred miles before taking it down for a resto but in the short time I drove it the idle quality improved and it seemed quicker off the line.

Ignitor II and the ignitor II coil, bypass the ballast with this setup.my car runs the best it ever has.

i tried an ignitor II on my 69 440. would not crank. followed instructions. explain bypass on ballast please see if i can learn anything. i bought a used unit and it may be bad

I have one in my Buick that's for sale......3 years of worry free...tune free.....running......love it.....

Im Using perTronix Ignitor I with Flame-Thrower I 1.5 ohm 40,000 V and did bypass the ballast. No problems so far but someone mention i should not bypass the ballast....

I installed one on my 66 Charger (Ignitor 1) and love it.

Take the ballast and gut it and solder a 10 gauge piece of wire between the 2 terminals.follow instructions with kit,red wire to the pos side of coil and black wire to the negative side.did you set the gap correct?make sure you use the pertronix ignitor II coil

You SHOULD bypass the ballast on them. I was told that by Pertronix. I forgot to mention above that I did that as well.

On a forum here someone told me, If you have Pertronix version 1, it needs a ballast resistor as far as I know. The versions 2 & 3 have electronic current limiting and don't need a ballast resistor.

This may not be true. but if its is i have to make some changes. and install a Mopar Electronic Ignition Control Unit

FWIW
I have the Pertronix I on one of my Mopars and really like it. So far, so good.

I was told by Pertronix for my Ignitor III, to disconnect the ballast. You might be right for the version I or II. I cannot say as I have never used them.

You are absolutely correct, that's the way it is.

Pertronix says This about the Ignitor

1. The Ignitor is designed for 12-Volt negative ground systems.
2. Leaving the ignition “ON” with the engine “OFF” for an extended period could result in permanent damage to
the Ignitor.
3. See Chart on back page for coil recommendations.
4. Four and six cylinder engines require a minimum of 3.0 ohms of primary resistance and eight cylinder
engines require a minimum of 1.5 ohms of primary resistance. Do not remove resistors if the coil primary
resistance is less than specified.
5. If your Ignition coil has the recommended primary resistance, remove or bypass all external resistors.
6. The Ignitor is compatible as a trigger for most electronic boxes.

It does look like it hadles 12V? Since the Coil have 1.5 ohms resistance?

I have thought about Pertronix but always decide to leave the points. They work to about 5000 rpm and are not expensive, and I am afraid to fuss too much with electrical and ignition. It might finally decide to quit or catch on fire.
