I purchased my {ahem} Dart last September and I am just now getting to working on her.

So the first thing I go for is the brakes...easy enough, right? wrong!! lol

I start with the pass side front. I try to get the drum off, but it wont budge. I back the adjuster off as far as it will go, and it still wont move. I smack it with a BFH (4# dead blow), no dice. I heat the face of the drum up with a propane torch for a minute or so, still stuck. Buddy of mine says go to Harbor and get a 3-jaw puller. The biggest one they have is 8". I buy it anyway and extend it to 12" with some "engineering" lol

I put a 1/2" socket wrench on it and start a-crankin'. Puller gets real tight and I smack it with the dead blow a few times and the damn thing still wont come off!! @%^&$%^*!!!!

I crank on it a little more but it still wont move. sooooooo discretion being the better part of valor, I stop before I break something.

Ive done drums on the GTX before {after further thought, it was only the rears i did}, but they all came off nice and easy. no hang ups. Am I missing something? are the Dart's drums different??

What say Ye members of the finest damn board on the net??

You could try pulling the drum and hub as an assembly. Then you might see whats going on with it.

I'm not sure if your photo is clear,but... Why is the puller on the drum with the nut still on the spindle ?

Take that nut and outer bearing out first Mario.

I had a similar situation with my 67 Belvedere too . . . the drums were so worn that there was a big groove in the drum, so try backing the adjuster off as far as you can ( in my case, it took a while to get it backed off enough to actually allow it to come over the pads . . . and I still had to "help" it get over the pads . . . good luck . . .

Yes, I did finally get my off . . .

AND I refrained from saying "beat it like a drum ! " . . . ( bad joke )

I think the drum is swedged on from the factory making it a one piece hub! You can try and grind the studs at the drum if you really need to change it! Better yet just take the nut off and pull it as a unit! I noticed in the pic. the nut is still on! Hope this helps!

We're talking about the FRONT here, guys. Cotter pin, retainer, nut, outer bearing OFF... then, the drum comes off. Back the shoes a bit if you must. That's it.

x3 im no expert just curious

X4. I am an expert. Take the bearing retainer nut off. Here is a trick for you. Once the outer bearing and washer are out, screw the nut back on. When sliding the drum off, let the inner bearing ride on the spindle. When the inner bearing hits the spindle nut, it will remove the inner bearing and seal together.

Just goes to show that you learn something new everyday!! {not to mention I feel like a total fool for trying to use a puller :blush:}

I thought these drums are the same as the GTXer's-slide off!

so it's a whole assembly then. got it. once it's all off, I take it I will have to repack the bearings?

Im going through the entire braking system and i already found the rubber lines have cracks in them.

thank y'all so much for all the help! im damn glad I stopped before I really screwed things up!! lol

Yes I would repack the bearings.
Also on your GTX the drums should not just slide off of the hub. Sound like they have the wrong wheel studs. Should have to drive the studs out to remove the drum from the hub.

ya know, now that I think of it, I didnt do the front brakes on the GTX (been like 6 years and my memory aint what it used to be lol). I did the rears cuz the parking brake wasnt working.

So basically any front drum comes off with hub and all?

And you have to take the nut off of "ALL" front spindles to get the drum off !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The rear drums come off much easier. Just remove the wheel, then the drum retaining clips, and the drum will come right off (maybe, after you back off on the adjuster and a few whacks with the dead blow).

that's how I remember it...I got the rears mixed up with the fronts.
