"A video showing a car attempting to park but actually plowing into journalists might have resulted from the Volvo’s owner not paying an extra fee to have the car avoid pedestrians.

"The video, taken in the Dominican Republic, shows a Volvo XC60 reversing itself, waiting, and then driving back into pedestrians at speed. The horrifying pictures went viral and were presumed to have resulted from a malfunction with the car — but the car might not have had the ability to recognize a human at all.

"The accident may have happened because owners have to pay for a special feature known as “pedestrian detection functionality”, which costs extra. The cars do have auto-braking features as standard, but only for avoiding other cars — if they are to avoid crashing into pedestrians, too, then owners must pay extra.

“It appears as if the car in this video is not equipped with Pedestrian detection,” Volvo spokesperson Johan Larsson told Fusion. “This is sold as a separate package.”

What??? You're going to make a car that self-parks but can only recognize other vehicles and not pedestrians unless you pay extra???

A really smart friend once told me that nothing that you build will work 100% of the time. This looks like a good example.

It's more proof positive that this is just another piece of crap to take the human element out of driving. I'm not buying into it, I'll trust a human more than I trust this POS, Volvo or not!

I REALLY don't want self driving cars.

What's the point?

If I don't want to drive, I'll take the bus or train/light rail (if we had trains).

At least he took his hands out of his pockets to break his fall into the hood. Why would the idiot stand there while a car is accelerating towards him?

The demonstration was supposed to show the safety features of auto braking when in auto mode AFAIK. It later turned out that that feature was disabled on the particular car...

This is from the 2010 demonstration of the Volvo auto brake system https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aNi17YLnZpg

No, the problem is the location. Spanish is the language of the Dominican Republic and the Volvo, being from Sweden, needs the extra cost Spanish language package to go with the pedestrian package...

Sorry officer I didn't mean to run that bus stop full of kids over but I couldn't afford the extra pedestrian sensing program....

Idiocy at work, give me pedals and a steering wheel anyday.

All time self driving cars are so far away, your kids kids may see it happen as the industry will slowly integrate self driving options into cars. The new tech age of kids are embracing this and automakers are taking notice. Generations to follow will even be more tech savy and the art of defensive driving, self parking, will be lost. The technology is out there but this generation of drivers would never trust it. They can make commercial planes take off, cruise, and land by itself but who would want to fly in a pilot-less plane? Not me.

Stupid is as stupid does, people just stood there too,
can we say, "many a law suit's are coming"...

never trust a self driving anything
