Finally fixing trans pan gasket leak.Dropped pan and found shavings on bottom of pan and on filter.Seems the tail-shaft bearing has alot of play, can hear it about 3/4 of the way up the tail-shaft.Going to pull the tail shaft and try to replace the bearing.Anybody know where i can get the bearing and the 2 seals? Thanks

Its actually a bushing not a bearing on an automatic trans. Automatic trans is what I gather from your post. You can buy all the parts needed from napa. But will probably need a pro to remove your tail shaft for replacement.

Also the bushing is pressed in. If you try to drive it in it will distort and bind on the driveshaft yoke.

There's a bearing in the tailshaft housing too, in the middle of the output shaft, if that's what you're talking about. Not sure if that will slide off the output shaft without complete removal & disassembly of the trans. I don't recall seeing that fail without some major issue elsewhere. A trans shop will have the paper seal between the tailshaft & main case, along with the snap ring cover seal, rear seal & the bushing. If the bearing is shot, I would expect the rear support in the back of the case to be shot too. Good luck.

There are removal and installation tools for tailshaft bushing replacement
that can be used with the tranny in the car and no tailshaft removal needed.

Thanks guys for the input! Found a tranny shop that will rebuild the tail-shaft for me.Looking for parts last night but could not find any.I do have a local napa stoe nearby.Good to now parts are available. One more question-what is the main difference between early and late 727s?

I bought a Timken kit that included the bushing and seals from Advanced auto, can't remember the part number but they sell them. They're not bad at all to replace as long as you have a press and don't mind giving it a try. You didn't say if you were taking the tail off for the shop or not but if so there's a small cover plate on the bottom of the tail housing (at the tranny mount) with 2 screws in it, pull it off and there's a snap ring under it that has to be held open as you pull the housing.

The main differences are the number / size of the input shaft splines and part throttle kick down. The spline difference really only matters when you deal with torque converters.

Plus the later ones also had a lock up converter.

So heres what i found.Bearing is in great shape can even reinstall. What I found after looking around a bit is the motor witch is a 73 block has the small width balancer(witch means its internally balanced) has a weight on torque converter. There should be no weight on converter-right? This could be causing my vibration.
