Hello everyone. I am trying to get some more info on the possibility of running a 4 or 5spd behind our 72 Coronet. This is a 24 hours of lemons car that no longer has a speedo or interior so the After a few searches it seams that factory A833 is getting kind of expensive. I have done some reading on other forums of people using the Dakota 3.9 v6 bell housing on a older small block Mopar. This would some of the Aisin style transmissions to bolt up to the older small block Mopars. However I am having issues trying to find out what flywheel and clutch people use. As the two options we are looking at a Toyota Transmision and the other comes out of GM products. I know that a custom clutch disc will be needed. As well as a modified driveshaft. So hear are a few questions. Hopefully some people can answer them.
For the 4spd
- It looks like there was a modified tunnel for the side mount shifter. This could be home made froom some sheet metal.
- Was there a factory manual transmission option for the Coronet. Pedals could be make up but a bolt it options is always better.
- Just making sure that the older Dodge uses a hydraulic clutch system. I have seen some conflicting stuff, however I have spent days looking at stuff.
- I have herd that the 727 auto driveshaft will mate up to the A833 with a yoke change. Are the lengths the same or do this require a new driveshaft.
- Transmission mount. I figure we could just make one up or if we are lucky source one.
For the 5spd
- We are mainly looking into the AR5 from Gm cars. Mainly either a Colorado/Canyon/H3 or a Solstice or Sky. The R154 is around but getting expensive vs the very similar AR5
- Could the 3.9 Dakota Clutch be used with a custom pilot bushing and disc. This would use the pressure plate and flywheel for the 3.9 and a disc made from act or spec. Biggest question is the pilot bearing. Being that we have a 318 it is an internal balance engine. So no need to have the flywheel balanced. Anybody know more about using a different transmission.
- Again on the pedals. If the factory used Hydraulic clutch master and slave cylinder than we should be ok as the later units are Hydraulic as well. If not is there a 71-74 pedal for the B-body that is hydraulic.
- Mounts would have to be homemade. This is not a big issue. The driveshaft would also have to be custom made.
- Starter Has anybody used the 3.9 Dakota bellhousing. If so what starter motor did you use.
I am sure I will have more questions. I am mainly looking into the 5spd. I was curious if anybody else had done the swap r154 swap. If not are there anymore popular options. T-5 is one but its not known for its strength in factory form.
