Painted Drums

my RR came with painted drums they look redish orange. I was wondering what color paint I should to paint them?

On of the drums on my car was that color...I painted them both black before i put the rearend back in the car...So black is my vote...

Most brake drums should be painted with a color that looks like bare metal. Eastwood has a paint called spray grey that does a pretty good job

Red painted drums from the factory meant that the car came with the optional Chrome plateed road wheels in 1968 and their similar following type wheel for 69 with the chrome trim ring.

Depends on wheels. I painted mine black but with black mag spokes they looked solid black. So I painted them aluminum and it looks much better.

My 70 Road Runner also had red painted drums ... so I repainted them with red caliper paint. Have seen an artical in a mopar mag a while back that stated which years had that paint treatment. I believe it was continued until at least 1970.

Having said that, my 72 will get red drums when I repaint it so the rallye wheel holes will show red .... but I only paint it as a stripe ....not on the hub area so when I have the steeel wheels on with no hub caps, it is just cast iron grey in that exposed area.

I just bought an original rearend out of a 440 powered 1972 charger with rear swaybar and it had red painted drums on the back...not much left of red but can definately see remnants that look hand painted all the way around.

My buddies 71 Barracuda also has the face of the drum painted red and it's an original road wheel car. It's also my understanding that the visible face of the front caliper is also red like the drum.

Yeah, I am not sure how many years after 70 the did it but it was only on cars with the optional wheels where it would show through the spokes or slots.

Anybody know what the correct red paint color is for the drums and calipers? Wanting to do my 72 Charger like they were added from a junkyard or something, i.e., changing the 10" drums to 11" and beefing up the front disks, booster, and master with factory reproductions from a couple of different years.

Don't paint the surface where the lugs go. Something like the drum in this thread

Just painted them black - I have cragar mags and didn't want the paint on the drums to distract from the character of the wheels. Just my opinion. I could give a sh$t about perfectly correct. Just want what looks good.
