SO I TOOK MY 67 GTX FOR A RIDE AFTER WORK DOWN TO THE BEACH FOR A FEW HOURS, CHECK OUT THE CHICKS, RELAX AFTER A HARD DAYS WORK YADA , YADA , YADA... ITS ABOUT 6:30 FIGURE I'LL START HEADING HOME .SO I MUST CROSS TWO BODIES OF WATER, THE ONE BRIDGE IS ABOUT A 1/4 MILE LONG A MILE LATER THE SECOND ONE THE ROBERT MOSES CROSWAY ABOUT A 3 MILE DRIVE OVER THE WATER, 3 LANE NO SHOULDER TO PULL OVER, TRAFFIC MOVING ABOUT 80 MPH.
SO I'M MOVING ALONG ABOUT A 1/2 MILE FROM THE BRIDGE WHEN OUT OF NO WARE SHE STARTS TO SPUTTER MY NOSE DETECTS THE ACIDIC SMELL OF BURNING PLASTIC ,I GLANCE AT MY AMP METER THE NEEDLE IS SWINGING ERRATICALLY BACK AND FORTH THEM THE SOUND OF SILENCE .O **** I PUT HER IN NEUTRAL TRIED TO START HER ,NOTHING, PUT MY FLASHERS ON NOTHING !!! !!MAYBE I COULD COAST TO THE CREST OF THE BRIDGE AND COAST DOWN THE OTHER SIDE AND PULL OF THE ROAD .
AS LUCK WOULD HAVE IT I CAME TO A STOP A HUNDRED YARDS FROM THE BRIDGE. CARS FLYING BY 80+MPH I COULD NOT GET OUT OF THE CAR I WAS UP AGAINST A RAILING 100 FEET OVER THE WATER TWICE I SEEN IN MY REAR VIEW MIRROR CARS SWERVING AND SKIDDING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I SAID THIS IS IT I'M GOING TO GET SLAMMED IN THE REAR DESTROYING ME AND MY MINT 67 GTX
I CALLED 911 THEY PUT ME ON A CALL WAITING LIST "WE WILL ANSWER YOUR EMERGENCY IN THE ORDER IN WITCH IT IS RECEIVED !!!!" THIS IS A NIGHTMARE NO NOT HERE !!OF ALL PLACES TO BREAKDOWN , NO PLACE TO PULL OVER ITS ALMOST TWILIGHT, I HAVE NO LIGHT WHAT SO EVER!! I'M DOOMED !!!THIS IS IT I'M GONNA MAKE THE PAPERS.
THEN TO MY RELIEF A LITTLE IMPORT STOPPED BEHIND ME AND PUT HIS FLASHERS ON TO WORN APPROACHING TRAFFIC .HE CALLED A TOW TRUCK FOR ME AND STAYED WAVING TRAFFIC AWAY UNTIL A STATE TROOPER ARRIVED.
OF THE MANY CARS THAT FLEW BY ME AND NEARLY KILLED ME THIS ONE MAN STOPPED AND RISKED HIS LIFE TO HELP A FELLOW PERSON IN NEED I WAS TRULY IN DYER STRAIGHTS. MY CAR IS WHITE, THE ROAD IS CONCRETE TAN IN COLOR ITS ALMOST DARK AND I'M SITTING DEAD IN THE WATER SO TO SPEAK WITH NO LIGHTS AND NO WAY TO GET OUT OF THE CAR EVEN IF I WANTED TO WITH CARS FLYING BY TWO FEET FROM MY DOOR. O I FAILED TO MENTION MY DOG WAS WITH ME TO. SO $180 BUCKS FOR THE TOW ,TURNS OUT THE FUSIBLE LINK BLEW WHY I DO NOT NO KNOW. THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER I MEAN RED HOT WIRE BEGINS .
FOR THE FIRST TIME IN A LONG TIME I BARE WITNESS TO A TRUE ACT OF HUMANITY AN UNSUNG HERO,THIS PERSON RISKED HIS LIFE TO PROTECT ME AND OTHERS I AM TRULY HUMBLED BY THIS WHOLE EXPERIENCE .I WILL PAY IT FORWARD FOR SURE. SORRY FOR THE RANT

The guy who stopped showed what "New York Values" are all about. Glad it all ended safely.

That is also one of my fears, so I really do feel for you in that situation.

I am happy hear that everything worked out and there was further damage. My hat's off to the one motorist who stopped to help. He had no problem to be inconvenienced to help out someone in need in a potential dangerous situation! That in itself is honorable and unfortunately a rarity!

Good on the guy who stopped. We need more people in the world who give a crap about others and are willing to help.

Your fusible link burning up means you have a serious short somewhere. I will get on my soap box and again encourage everyone to have a good fire extinguisher in their car. So many of these beautiful classic cars burn up because the wiring is old and shorts, causing a fire. A good fire extinguisher is cheap insurance, and I encourage everyone to get one...

Sounds like you had an angel looking out for you, your dog and the 67 GTX that day! Maybe a good idea like hsorman said to keep an extinguisher on hand, and maybe a little emergency kit with a flashlight and maybe some flares or reflective markers.

Glad you, the dog and the car are all OK!

THANKS GUYS ,I HAVE A LARGE HALON IN THE CONSOLE AND A SMALL CHEMICAL EXTINGUISHER AS A BACK UP IN THE TRUNK, BUT THANK THE LORD IT WAS THE LINK AND IT DID ITS JOB. I SAW NO SMOKE IN THE COCKPIT BUT WORRIED THE THE WHOLE RIDE HOME MY EYES WHERE GLUED TO THE REAR VIEW IN THE TOW TRUCK. DIDN'T KNOW IT WAS THE FUSIBLE LINK UNTIL I GOT THE CAR HOME. NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE ELECTRICAL TILL THIS WISH ME LUCK I'M GOING WIRE DIVING

That's a tough spot for sure!! Posted a vid of the bridge for everyone to better see what a jam you were in!!
Take a look at the junction block, bet the wire is melted caused by a bad amp gauge

Some good people still out there...
Even in NY area {sorry I had to...LOL, mainly that's for Steve}

glad everything came out OK too,
you, your GTX & the dog are all home & safe

good luck, with the electrical gremlins

Just be wary of that Halon extinguisher....Halon is designed to consume oxygen rapidly...which means the oxygen in your lungs as well.

I agree that one needs to know how and why their extinguishers work.
In the case of the Halon type ---I would avoid using in inside the car with the windows up.

The up sides of Halon are many. It's especially good for putting out a small fire without causing more damage then the fire has already caused.

Wow that's quite a story. I'm sure you were scared to death. I don't think I would have bee. Thinking so much about the car as I would am I going to get out of this alive. You had an angel watching out for you that night. Seems as though you recognize that. It wasn't your day to die - God works in mysterious ways... Remember that night and do pay it forward.

Prius didn't make it,,,,,,,,,,,,,

On a related note, check the back of the ammeter in your dash. They can get real hot if the connections get loose. The plastic can actually melt and cause the terminals to short out. The full charging voltage goes through the ammeter. I had this happen on my 70 Road Runner many years ago!

Glad to glad to hear you and the car made it out okay. That sure was a scary situation.
In my cars there are several things always keep in the console/glove box.

1. Mosquito repellent
2. Small sharp knife/box cutter
3. 2, 10min safety flares
4. Spare fuses/ballast resistor
5. Multitool pliers
6. Energy bar
7. Spare ammunition

I put the small stuff in a zip lock freezer bag.

MoPar or NO CAR!
