SO I TOOK MY 67 GTX FOR A RIDE AFTER WORK DOWN TO THE BEACH FOR A FEW HOURS, CHECK OUT THE CHICKS, RELAX AFTER A HARD DAYS WORK YADA , YADA , YADA... ITS ABOUT 6:30 FIGURE I'LL START HEADING HOME .SO I MUST CROSS TWO BODIES OF WATER, THE ONE BRIDGE IS ABOUT A 1/4 MILE LONG A MILE LATER THE SECOND ONE THE ROBERT MOSES CROSWAY ABOUT A 3 MILE DRIVE OVER THE WATER, 3 LANE NO SHOULDER TO PULL OVER, TRAFFIC MOVING ABOUT 80 MPH.
SO I'M MOVING ALONG ABOUT A 1/2 MILE FROM THE BRIDGE WHEN OUT OF NO WARE SHE STARTS TO SPUTTER MY NOSE DETECTS THE ACIDIC SMELL OF BURNING PLASTIC ,I GLANCE AT MY AMP METER THE NEEDLE IS SWINGING ERRATICALLY BACK AND FORTH THEM THE SOUND OF SILENCE .O **** I PUT HER IN NEUTRAL TRIED TO START HER ,NOTHING, PUT MY FLASHERS ON NOTHING !!! !!MAYBE I COULD COAST TO THE CREST OF THE BRIDGE AND COAST DOWN THE OTHER SIDE AND PULL OF THE ROAD .
AS LUCK WOULD HAVE IT I CAME TO A STOP A HUNDRED YARDS FROM THE BRIDGE. CARS FLYING BY 80+MPH I COULD NOT GET OUT OF THE CAR I WAS UP AGAINST A RAILING 100 FEET OVER THE WATER TWICE I SEEN IN MY REAR VIEW MIRROR CARS SWERVING AND SKIDDING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I SAID THIS IS IT I'M GOING TO GET SLAMMED IN THE REAR DESTROYING ME AND MY MINT 67 GTX
I CALLED 911 THEY PUT ME ON A CALL WAITING LIST "WE WILL ANSWER YOUR EMERGENCY IN THE ORDER IN WITCH IT IS RECEIVED !!!!" THIS IS A NIGHTMARE NO NOT HERE !!OF ALL PLACES TO BREAKDOWN , NO PLACE TO PULL OVER ITS ALMOST TWILIGHT, I HAVE NO LIGHT WHAT SO EVER!! I'M DOOMED !!!THIS IS IT I'M GONNA MAKE THE PAPERS.
THEN TO MY RELIEF A LITTLE IMPORT STOPPED BEHIND ME AND PUT HIS FLASHERS ON TO WORN APPROACHING TRAFFIC .HE CALLED A TOW TRUCK FOR ME AND STAYED WAVING TRAFFIC AWAY UNTIL A STATE TROOPER ARRIVED.
OF THE MANY CARS THAT FLEW BY ME AND NEARLY KILLED ME THIS ONE MAN STOPPED AND RISKED HIS LIFE TO HELP A FELLOW PERSON IN NEED I WAS TRULY IN DYER STRAIGHTS. MY CAR IS WHITE, THE ROAD IS CONCRETE TAN IN COLOR ITS ALMOST DARK AND I'M SITTING DEAD IN THE WATER SO TO SPEAK WITH NO LIGHTS AND NO WAY TO GET OUT OF THE CAR EVEN IF I WANTED TO WITH CARS FLYING BY TWO FEET FROM MY DOOR. O I FAILED TO MENTION MY DOG WAS WITH ME TO. SO $180 BUCKS FOR THE TOW ,TURNS OUT THE FUSIBLE LINK BLEW WHY I DO NOT NO KNOW. THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER I MEAN RED HOT WIRE BEGINS .
FOR THE FIRST TIME IN A LONG TIME I BARE WITNESS TO A TRUE ACT OF HUMANITY AN UNSUNG HERO,THIS PERSON RISKED HIS LIFE TO PROTECT ME AND OTHERS I AM TRULY HUMBLED BY THIS WHOLE EXPERIENCE .I WILL PAY IT FORWARD FOR SURE. SORRY FOR THE RANT
WELL REPLACED THE FUSIBLE LINK, IT DID IT'S JOB ONLY BURNED UP ITS SELF. NO DAMAGE TO THE BULKHEAD, JUST GOT A LITTLE WARM .FEMALE CLIP LOOKS GOOD.STARTED TROUBLESHOOTING,
FROM UNDER THE DASH EVERYTHING LOOKS AND SMELLS AND FELLS OK. THE BACK OF THE BULK HEAD WIRE (HEAVY RED) LOOKS PERFECT , THE CONNECTIONS TO THE AMP METER ARE TIGHT AND LOOK FACTORY FRESH I AM AMAZED AT HOW CLEAN IT IS UP THERE.
CONNECTED THE LEAD GOING TO THE STARTER RELAY FROM THE BATTERY AND BIG SPARKS, OK I STILL HAVE A NASTY SHORT. DISCONNECT THE HOT LEAD OFF OF THE ALTERNATOR AND NO MORE ARCING . REMOVED THE ALTERNATOR TO HAVE IT TESTED, IF IT CHECKS OUT THEN I HAVE AN ISSUE WITH THE CHARGING SYSTEM WIRING ,WHEN I REMOVED THE ALTERNATOR I FOUND THIS (SEE PIC)

THIS DIODE BROKE LOOSE AND SHORTED ITSELF AGAINST THE INNARDS AND THE CASE AND FIGURE THIS IS WHERE MY SHORT CAME FROM .
SO MY BUDDY LENT ME A 2 FIELD SQUARE BACK TO TEST MY THEORY, I GROUNDED THE ONE FIELD, WIRED IT UP AND NO MORE ARCHING AT THE BATTERY.FIRE THE CAR UP ALL SYSTEM OK, FUSIBLE LINK ICE COLD TO THE T0UCH AND SHES CHARGING AT 14.6 VOLTS RUNNING AND NO DRAW ON BATTERY WHEN CAR IS OFF .ALL LOOKS GOOD .WELL STILL THINKING OF DOING THE M.A.D. AMP METER BYPASS UP GRADE.WHILE I HAVE THE SEAT OUT AND HALF THE WIRING UNWRAPPED IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT.
MAN I THOUGHT FOR SURE I WOULD BE PULLING MY HAIR OUT. WELL I WAS ABLE TO TRACK DOWN THE UNSUNG HERO THAT CALLED THE TOW TRUCK AND RISKED HIS LIFE. TURNS OUT HE IS A FRIEND OF THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER. IRONICALLY HE'S AND ELECTRICAL INSPECTOR FUNNY.
SO I HAVE HIS NUMBER AND I'M GOING TO STALK HIM I MEAN THANK HIM AGAIN FOR HIS HELP .THINKING OF CALLING THE LOCAL NEWS AND ASKING THEM IF THEY WANT TO DO A HUMAN INTEREST STORY ON WHAT HAPPENED.
ONE THING FOR SURE I AM KEEPING A BIG *** FLASHLIGHT IN THE GLOVE BOX JUST IN CASE SOMETHING LIKE THIS EVER HAPPENS AGAIN.MURPHY MUST HAVE JUMP IN THE CAR WHEN I WAS AT THE BEACH . I'LL POST IT IF THE NEWS DECIDES TO DO THE STORY.
P.S. GRUNDY IS REIMBURSEING ME THE $180 BUCKS FOR THE TOW . BE SAFE, GOD BLESS

One thing that I have learned though (from my failures) is that you will never have this problem yourself again. :thumbsup:

It is the cruel way of parts failing. One can learn and be ready but the next failure will be something new.

Your experience will never--oops--- help you again but it will help others. Cheers.
