So, my wife came home from the grocery store the other day, obviously pissed. The winter crowd has returned, traffic is crazy and stores are packed. She was in line at the store, several people were in line between her and the person at the check out. The woman checking out was 38 cents short and it was obviously going to hold up the line.
My wife calls out to the cashier, "give her the 38 cents and I'll pay for it when I get there". Problem solved, she thought. Well it turned out that the 38 cents short, was from the woman's one basket with several cases of beer. The other basket of food stuff she paid for with her EBT card. A couple of people in line started griping about that and my wife paying for it. My wife doesn't take crap from anybody and she told them that they could stand in line longer if they wanted, or better yet, go back home where you came from and spend your social security money there.

Seems paying 38 cents is no big deal to me, I don't think anyone should give her trouble for not wanting to wait. But I don't understand what she means by "go back home and spend your social security money there". Internet shopping you mean? And what does Social Security have to do with EBT?

If I was .38 cts short, I hope somebody would help me too. Doesn't matter where she gets food $, beer is important......
I like going to the drive through for coffee, and paying for the car behind me. I had somebody do that for me many years ago and never forgot it.

It's one of those things we all have to deal with now days more than ever.

I would have done the same thing. Give them the change to get them moving. Then I would have taken my time unloading my cart just to piss off the ones behind me for bitching.

I had almost the same thing happen last week.
The line at this one cashier was short. I whipped in there and there were two wemon, two full carts, dividing their groceries, paying with ebt, bank card and a check that wouldn't go through. Had to get the manager to straighten it all out. What a mess!

Some people are taking advantage of the system, some are unfortunate and are just trying to survive. Don't be too quick to judge. Tis the Season!

I get the story and the situation. Putting the dollar (or cent) amount and the waiting aside, the issue many would have a problem with is the use (and misuse) of EB fundsT. EBT Is meant to assist those in need of basic food necessities. Things like alcohol, tobacco, etc are excluded.

To have someone using/misusing EBT funds when it's apparent they have money to buy alcohol and/or cigs is TOTAL BULLSHIT in my eyes. There's a purpose behind it and I don't like the mass abuse of the program. In the situation above, all it would have taken to solve the problem was not purchasing the beer. Simple. But I'm sure to that person (like so many others abusing EBT funds), that beer is deserved.

No, not "home" to the internet. Home to where everything is better, people know what they are doing and everything is cheaper (up north). Our little town at least triples in population during the winter months and things really get hectic this time of year. After hearing all the criticism from the "visitors", sometimes you just have to speak out.

As the old saying goes. "It's better to have beer and no money, then to have money and no beer"!

Ah, good one then!

Wow, I'm really on the fence on this one. Like in the middle of a see-saw. On one hand, the issue of EBT funds while you have money for beer. On the other hand... beer. I'm kinda tipping on to the "beer" side (as usual :) )

Give your wife a big hug and a massive atta girl. She made the right call, without a doubt. **** the snow birds coming down there and screwing up your lifestyle. Pompous @ss hats.

Just cause their poor doesn't mean they should be deprived of the bare necessities. Your wife is a saint and should be commended for her heroic efforts. PM me and i'll give you address where you can mail a six pack to!

The reason for the ebt may be the fault of the beer.....
Back before the cards I would see the pos nickle and dime the food stamps buying items that cost $1.09 so they could get $.91 a few times until they had enough to buy a pack of smokes...ya it pissed me off too!
